Good Book to Start Learning to Use for Faces and Figures

This book was bought because I have no background and only a bit of self-taught experience in sculpture with clay. So far, I am still on the second project, a bust of a little girl named Amy. (See the picture of the dust jacket.) I have had several false starts, but I keep improving, so I have hopes. The book combines instruction in both the Mudbox program as well as the artistic end---proportions, shapes, anatomy, etc. I believe that I will be able to produce a good likeness.

My only disappointment is that the next project is a full sculpture of a figure of a monster, rather than a normal human being. I realize that the program was developed originally to create just such creatures, and perhaps they will be more to the taste of other purchasers. I think there is still something to be learned in the exercise, so I plan to continue on with it.

The book covers an earlier release of Mudbox, so there a few differences, but they are not so great that the book is not helpful. However, I would suggest that they and other publishers of similar books adopt the practice of the Nolo Patent It Yourself books; Between editions, they publish errata and addenda to the latest edition on their website. This is a smart business practice, because not only does it encourage purchase of a book that may be a generation out-of-date, but it encourages visits to their website.

This Technique goes Beyond Creativity! Well Done

This book, Digital Sculpting with Mudbox, by from what I have been exposed to so far, is way beyond my "old school" creativity and adds a wealth of information causing a new unlimited amount of uses. The book is well written but even better, very well illustrated. Bridgette Mongeon and Mike de la Flor explain techniques in a very palatable language, a nice blend between art and technology yet intriguing. What a Style Guide is. What a Style Guide is not.

It's disappointing to read all the negative reviews of what I think is a very good book. I think many reviewers lack the understanding of just what constitutes a style guide, so I am going to give my best definition of what a style guide is. Style guides, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, are more concerned with good journalistic practices than graphic design, covering such topics as how to treat page titles, the proper attributing of an author, how to construct footnotes, the importance of dating articles, consistent nomenclature, the consistent use of language, and other important but admittedly dry topics. In almost all cases these things will influence graphic design, and some *very* basic, but in my opinion very good, graphic design information is covered. Also covered, to a fairly high level of detail, is information on graphic format and web color, navigation, and basic usability issues. What this book does not cover, and what one should not expect from a style guide, are examples of cutting-edge design, or information on current design trends (or what many of us think of when we thing of "style"). I think all graphic designers would do well to head the advice in this book, and think that most good graphic designers already do, and are probably already familiar with the information presented here. Obviously designers that know the rules usually break them with better results than those that don't. I think most designers will appreciate this book. If you are looking for an example of really cool, award-winning Websites, try the magazine Communication Arts, especially their Interactive Annual. If you are looking for a great book to introduce you to the basics, I haven't found a better book than this.
To sum up:
"Style" means "cool" to most of us. Try Communication Arts Interactive Annual for exaples of current, award-winning "style".
A "Style Guide" is an explaination of common conventions for a given medium. For an example of a good "Style Guide", get this book.

The First (and still best) style guide on web design

Let's get what this book is NOT out of the way: it is not a technical reference, nor is it a "killer graphic" how to. It is a style guide similar to The Chicago Manual of Style, and covers effective journalistic practices (the importance of dating material, article attributions, references, etc.)and sound layout and navigation strategies. Anyone with any experience in designing web sites will already have a working knowledge of most of what this book covers, but it is still an excellent reference for working professionals, and the best place to start for beginning designers I can think of.
Criticizing this book for hampering a designers "creativity" or use of technology seems silly to me. I've never met writers, editors or graphic designers that complained about The Chicago Manual of Style or Strunk and White. If you want to make sure your site has everything it might need to be useful to the user, buy this book. I also recommend "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity " by Jakob Nielsen, as well as "Envisioning Information" and "Visual Explanations" by Edward Tufte.

Excellent Design Guide That Gives Classic Advice

In the last forty years, our fast-paced, future-shocked society has made it harder to comprehend the idea that certain concepts are timeless and enduring. Believe it or not, some things do not have to "improve" every year or be replaced by the latest thing in vogue. That is why enlightened people still read Plato or listen to Beethoven. That is why I am giving this book 5 stars. What it teaches you are classic design concepts, only applied to the Web. Keep it clean and useful, keep it consistent, plan it out completely before you construct a single page. And most important, design it for the intended users, not for your own entertainment. If you are new to Web design especially, this book will get you off to a great start and give you much to think about.

Background:
In General Practice, common disorders are usually distinguished from each other by good history taking and careful examination. In contrast, hospital doctors have easy access to many investigations and often rely more heavily on these, than their clinical skills.

The inability of GPs to access such immediate tests in making the diagnosis, is the most difficult challenge for new doctors to overcome. Furthermore keeping up to date on signs and symptoms of uncommon conditions is also a challenge for more experienced GPs.

The ability to differentiate between benign illnesses and serious conditions without investigations is therefore a critical skill which GPs must possess in order to practise safely.

Scope of the book:
The book will cover all common symptoms which present in General Practice and list their recognised causes in order of prevalence.

Reaching a provisional diagnosis is the most difficult part of any GP consultation. The formulation of a management plan thereafter is often straight forward. Therefore this book will focus solely on the formulation of likely diagnoses and will not attempt to cover the investigations and management of them. However, important points will be highlighted where appropriate.

Bible for building ships in bottles

This was my second book of many books I own on building ships in bottles. I built my second ship in a bottle from this book (a clipper ship). This book and Don Hubbards book (my first book and first ship) are best for those starting out. What makes this book the best is that he also includes putting other things in bottles like a one legged pirate which I also built. This makes it a step above the rest. Once you learn from these two you can get others for more ideas and ship model plans. Even if your starting by building from a kit you need this book to learn the fundamentals.

The technique for getting a model ship into a bottle is pretty straightforward. Construct the ship outside the bottle with collapsible masts and sails, insert the rig, erect the masts, secure it, cork it, and you're done. I've been collecting various books on the subject recently and enjoy how each author puts their unique twist on the technique. Jack Needham has done an excellent job covering the topic.

When I Grow Up… (volume 1) by Patricia Asedegbega is absolutely enchanting. The characters are funny, smart, and believable. I was hooked immediately by this intriguing mystery. The plot is fast-paced and keeps readers guessing what will become of the characters’ jobs as well as their friendships. Patricia Asedegbega has brilliantly spun together a novel that will instantly lure readers in and keep them reading until they finish the book. A novel that features the Spanish culture as well as family, loyalty, and the desire to find the truth. When I Grow Up is a story that can be read by teens and adults. The ups and downs fo each character inside this novel, is captivating. I could hardly believe how everything was perfectly wrapped up and tied in together. The ending was super good and will leave readers feeling happy.

Inside of Patricia Asedegbega’s novel, When I Grow Up…, is a sweet and mysterious read. A book that shows readers one woman’s determination to help her friends when they are in need. Alicia at first feel awful around her boss and as the plot unfolds something between them has broken and her fear of her boss is gone. It’s like her boss became a totally new person with Alicia’s help. Then there’s the case of a friend being framed for a company crime that he hasn’t committed…Alicia knows it and she sets out like Nancy Drew and rushes to save the day…only can she? Readers will fall in love with this first volume by Patricia Asedegbega’s series. I highly recommend this delightful yet suspenseful novel to readers everywhere. I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series. When I Grow Up…is definitely a novel readers don’t want to miss.
