Richard A. Spencer is a professor of classics and biblical studies at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. A Protestant minister for 46 years, he has published commentaries on the New Testament and apocryphal books and written for many religious publications.

Accessible, but Still a Textbook

Although light in tone, Spencer's book is firmly a textbook. This I did not know when I requested it. That made it more challenging for me to read, but also envious of those with the chance to take college courses in Harry Potter. With obvious enthusiasm, Spencer dives into a detailed description on the motifs and themes of the Greek and Roman classics. To start, he explains in his introduction why he only included Greek and Roman classics (as opposed to biblical or near east), why he only consulted the seven books and not the additional material like interviews and Pottermore, and why he thinks Rowling’s use of mythology is important. From there, he moves into exploring the three main characters, as he sees them – Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort. He then writes about Major and Supporting Characters, Magical Beings and Materials, and the Classical Languages used in Harry Potter.
While his knowledge of Harry Potter and Greco-Roman mythology is extensive, I’m not sure there is quite enough for the whole book. Several times, particular in the chapters on Beings and Material and Supporting Characters, it seemed he was stretching a bit to find the connection. Or, assuming Rowling meant more by the name that she really may have (although, he states in the beginning he doesn’t claim to know her mind or motives, and so, he may be right.). I found his Appendix on the “Ring Composition” of Rowling’s work to be most enlightening. Rowling has been called a literary genius for her use of that literary device and Spencer’s appendix makes it clear how deeply woven into the narrative this device is.
While I’m not sure this book would appeal to your average Harry Potter fan, it will appeal to your diehard or academically-minded. And for anyone who also enjoys Greco-Roman mythology, this is a must-read. Spencer’s tone is jovial and accessible, if somewhat repetitive, and although it reads like a textbook, it’s not overly complicated or difficult. I recommend as a fine addition to the library of any Harry Potter fan.

Not a good book for a health economics course - students will surmise that health economics is just too difficult

The book covers quite a bit of ground in health economics. The chapters mix theory and reporting of recent empirical studies. Many important concepts and details are covered.

As an introduction to health economics, used for example for an MHA or MBA course, it is just too difficult for most students. Unless the student has just had a micro course they will struggle. Even so, some new charts and concepts not typically in an intro micro course will prove difficult. Some concepts, particularly graphs, are poorly explained.

Perhaps the worst part is that beyond the first few chapters the homework becomes almost impossible for students to do on the basis of the material provided in the text content. Some exam questions in the testbank just have wrong or impossible to find answers. For example, the text mentions one noteworthy study by two economists but does not give precise results data. One of the test questions asks about the precise results data. After poring over the chapter in vain for the answer, a student finally mentioned that he was able to find the data --- in the original journal article available through Pubmed. Do the professors expect students to find answers by looking up and reading all articles mentioned, referenced, or summarized? Absurd and poor quality control. A student could waste an hour searching in vain the text for that answer.

I do not recommend professors using this book Use Santerre et al. Use the new Bhattacharya book. Etc.

Decent for a policy course, a bit lacking for an Econs course

We're using this book for an upper-div Economics course, and I felt the text was a bit too high-level (as someone else mentioned) for use in an Econs course, in the sense that it's light on mathematical application and heavier on verbosity. The book seems to try to appeal to both those studying policy, while at the same time trying to appeal to those studying Economics, and I don't personally like the style. The book does assume a little basic familiarity with economists' tools and shows models, but for the most part I felt that it was just much too high-level and verbose and targeted more toward those studying the "policyer"-side of things. The result is that as someone studying Economics, I find myself a little put off by the super brief treatment of applying models and the paragraphs upon paragraphs of text. On the other side, I could see how those without much/any knowledge of economics could become confused, although I think they do a decent job of covering the basics concisely from the ground up without weighing down the text too much.

I will say that it does discuss relevant topics, and I've learned a lot of things I never knew, and am able to think about the economic side of health care in ways I never did before. I think the book could be great under the right circumstances. But chances are if you're using this for an upper-division Economics course, the problems you will solve for homework and on exams will likely cover the topics in a more advanced fashion, and the book doesn't provide enough mathematical examples and tools for that. So pray your professor distributes slides or lecture notes....mine doesn't.

This book is written at a very high level and requires extensive knowledge of economics to understand. Make sure if your professor is using this they are thorough or you will get lost.

About the Author

Eli C. Minkoff is Professor of Biology at Bates College. He received his bachelor's degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Columbia University and his MA and PhD from Harvard University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Society for the Study of Evolution, Dr. Minkoff has published several books as well as many articles in scholarly journals and encyclopedic reference works.

Pamela J. Baker is Professor of Biology at Bates College. She holds two Bachelor of Science degrees (from the University of Wales at Swansea, Magna Cum Laude, and from Bates College, Cum Laude). She also holds an MA and PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research focuses on the function of the immune system in bone diseases such as periodontal disease and on the investigation of new antimicrobial agents.

Nice try, but (sadly) no cigar!

The authors write in an engaging and animated style, and the "issues approach" to biology introduced in this text is an excellent way to introduce the material. Non-science students in particular will benefit from such interesting-- and sometimes even exciting-- demonstrations of the importance of the topics covered.
Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to its ideal, and does so right from the start. Chapter One, for example, is so full of mistakes, oversimplifications and downright silliness that I would be embarrassed to assign it to my students! There are errors of dates, misleading definitions of concepts (sometimes even conflicting with the books own glossary), and inept treatments of non-scientific concerns (ethics and religion). The "thought questions" throughout the book frequently tend to be written in leading ways that suggest which answers will be "acceptable." Although the book tries hard to bridge "the two cultures," the reader is constantly reminded that science is one thing (defined by its rigorous method), and all other human efforts are "other" (nonfalsifiable, therefore "anything goes"!)
As a biology text, this is quite successful. Topics and explanations are accurate, clear and simple. It is a pity that the authors' laudable attempt to connect the science to significant social, ethical, and political issues is not similarly clear and well-informed. I fear that in the long run such carelessness may do more harm than good.

No-nonsense, practical advise on using UML

From the "big picture" view to step by step guidance on how to get from requirements to design to code as quickly as possible, this has to be one of the most practical books available on using the UML successfully. It discusses how to create models that are actually useful to developers and business stakeholders, by focussing on the purpose of each of the diagrams under consideration. You wont find a 30 page use case template document here! Often witty, sometimes a little cynical (particularly of UML zealots), but always pragmatic and no-nonsense.
Only reason I didn't rate it 5 start is that it is a little hung-up about the iconix process and the fact that it isn't as popular as some other methodologies, when perhaps it should be.

Fantastic

The Rosenbert & Stephens's Book is a great example of doing by practice, but highly supported by foundations about what is important in UML.
The book offers a great discussion not only how use UML effectively, but how can you go through practice and coding. That's essencial if you want coding in a right way, but explore the UML notation.
The approach with ICONIX was fantastic. You develop a e-Commerce system completely using UML, Iconix process and coding with JAVA. I coudn't found books that offer this path.

Brilliant

This book is brilliant in what it does not tell you. It's brilliant in explaining what steps can be safely skipped when designing software. Sure, one can put a lot of time into design, and you can document a project a 100 different ways, but what's the minimum amount of documentation needed? What's the minimum amount of work we can do and get the job done really well? This book answers these essential questions. I own a software company and i've read a lot of books. This book, more than any other, influenced the process we use to build excellent software with a consistent and stable approach. In my company, this book would be required reading except that we live it, and folks in our company learn this material even if they don't read the book. Yes, this is the kind of book you can actually implement in your business.

In the last decade, even health agencies of the U.S. government have agreed that 70 percent of all disease is preventable and that 60 percent of adults are insufficiently active and, therefore, at risk for premature death. Jahnke, a doctor of oriental medicine, translates Asian traditions of self-healing (such as Qigong and yoga) into a graded four-part program of self-healing for daily practice by the sick or well. The first component, gentle movement of the body, consists of five rhythmic exercises described and illustrated with clear line drawings. The second, self-applied massage, combines massage of the ears, hands, and feet--each area a microsystem of the body that relates to specific, distant body areas or organs--with general self-massage. Next are breathing practices using abdominal breathing in specific techniques such as the "sigh of relief." Concluding the program are several methods of deep relaxation and meditation, crucial to calming and focusing the mind. Read to be healthy and live longer.

There's no question that Jahnke's book can be beneficial to anyone. So many easy exercises are described in the book, including breathing exercises, meditation,visualization, self-healing, and Qigong movements. I especially enjoy doing the flowing motion exercise. Jahnke states that the Chinese people say if you do this exercise 100 times a day you will be healthy for a long time. I enjoy doing it daily. It's fun and I feel I'm really improving my health. I also enjoyed the reflexology described in the book. I enjoy massaging the hands and feet. Certain areas on the hands and feet respond to different organs in the body. He also speaks of the importance of laughter in the healing process. He explains how the Cancer Recovery Society in Shanghai makes laughter top priority in social oncology. Yes, laughter certainly is good medicine and it is reinforced in this book. The book provides examples of ill people who have used various healing methods described in "The Healer Within," and how they benefited from them. Mind/Body Medicine is something we should all be aware of and practice to stay well and live longer. I found this book to be a "gem" and often refer to it. It is filled with wisdom, health benefits and a wealth of healthy exercises. I highly recommend this book!

An excellent review of the Spanish Civil War.

An excellent review of the Spanish Civil War. The author's view is pro-Republican and anti-Fascist (aka: "Nationalist" aka: Francoist). He analyzes and critiques the strong and weak points of each side (including intra-group factionalism) and how the dynamics of each side changed during the Civil War. He has a point of view, but is fair to both sides.

This book is relatively short, so don't expect a level of detail that longer books might present.

He gives a detailed description of events and then gives detailed descriptions of life (1) in the Republican zone and (2) in the Nationalist zone. He thus combines a traditional poltiical-military history with a social history approach.

He doggedly cites to (literally) 200 scholarly and other publications, which are listed at the back of the book in such detail as will permit anyone to do further research (i.e., having no "bar" to doing so based on an incomplete description of these sources).

Highly recommended.

Very helpful for international law professionals

As a law student who argued at international law moot courts and judged international law moot court practices, this book is invaluable. It has all of the necessary treaties, conventions, and law relevant and typical in almost any situation. Easy reference and is a lot neater than a binder full of those sources - as I previously used.
