"These pocket-sized titles are stunning....They make the perfect stocking stuffers!" - Metro
"Bought together or separately, these fiction titles are ideal stocking stuffers for the literature lover." - USA Today
Newly reissued as a Picador Modern Classic, Marilynne Robinson's brilliant, PEN/Hemingway Award-winning first novel
Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, the eccentric and remote sister of their dead mother. The family house is in the small town of Fingerbone on a glacial lake in the Far West, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere." Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.
For more than twenty years, Picador has been producing beautifully packaged literary fiction and nonfiction books from Manhattan's Flatiron Building. Our Twentieth Anniversary Modern Classics line pairs iconic books - The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson, and Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson - with a design that's both small enough to fit in your pocket and unique enough to stand out on your bookshelf.

Their lives spun off the tilting world like thread off a spindle," says Ruthie, the novel's narrator. The same may be said of Becket Royce's subtle, low-keyed reading. The interwoven themes of loss and love, longing and loneliness—"the wanting never subsided"—require a cool, almost impersonal touch. Royce narrates natural and manmade catastrophe and ruin as the author offers them: with a sort of watery vagueness engulfing extraordinary events. Occasionally this leads Royce to sound sleepy or to glide over humor. But she expresses Ruthie's story without any irksome effort to sound childlike, and she avoids the pitfall of dramatizing other characters, such as the awkward sheriff, the whispery insubstantiality of Aunt Sylvie or the ladies bearing casseroles to lure Ruthie away from Aunt Sylvie and into their concept of normality. Originally published in 1980 and filmed in 1987, Housekeeping is finally on audio because of Robinson's new Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Gilead. The novel holds up remarkably and painfully well, and the language remains searching and sonorous. Anatole Broyard wrote back then: "Here is a first novel that sounds as if the author has been treasuring it up all her life...." And because the author's rhythms, images and diction are so original and dense, this audio is a treasure for listeners who have or haven't read the book. Based on the Picador paperback. (Aug.)

Review
“So precise, so distilled, so beautiful that one doesn't want to miss any pleasure it might yield.” ―The New York Times Book Review
"These tiny little titles are pocket-sized, shiny, and gorgeous. Featuring authors like Marilynne Robinson and Jeffery Eugenides, they're the kind of books you'll have to own the entire set of, because they're just that pretty ― and it happens to be lovely that they fit in just about every bag you own. You can't be caught anywhere without a book, of course." ― Julia Seales, Bustle
"Our books today are the neatest little things you’ll see in the rest of 2015’s book-year: a set of Modern Classics from Picador Press, done up in a neat bow!" ― Open Letters Monthly

like, once every six months
By Sarah Do Osborne
I re-purchase this book, like, once every six months. Here's why: it is the most amazing book of all time. Though I've read it several times, I always find myself wanting to read it again. Having read it, I'm so thrilled by it, I want to share it with the people I meet. So I loan or give it to someone. Then I don't have it. Then I crave it, because, as I say, I love to read it. This goes on and on. It's the most incredible, perfect book I've ever read. And I was a Lit major, so I've read a lot of books.

It sits in your palms like a reverential volume
By Susanne Carlisle
Know why I bought this book? Because it is lovely on so many levels. It sits in your palms like a reverential volume, like a bible you found in a hotel room on the eve of despair that made things make a little more sense and sat in your pocket where you could touch it and receive some sort of comfort. It's a calm, soothing, intelligent book. Her words are like watching cream being poured into a glass coffee cup. They are beautiful and rich. It's like eating shortbread--you might not do it all the time, but when you do, you do it slowly, trying to remember how it tastes and feels.
Read it for the extraordinary calm of reading it.

Complex but beautiful prose. One must read slow
By S. Lee
In an erratic series of misfortunes, Lucille and Ruth are passed on from their mother's hand to their grandmother's to their great-aunts' and, finally, to their mother's little sister's: Sylvie. Living in their late grandmother's house, Sylvie's debut carries an unusual air of awry and enigma. Initially, Lucille and Ruth accepted their lot with Sylvie and thumbed down any resistance, fearful that Sylvie would uproot and leave--by abandonment or death--like the others prior. Yet, for Lucille, Sylvie's 'transient' way of 'housekeeping,' or facing reality, was too ineffective and suffocating. Thus, with ambitious rigor, Lucille paved her own path, leaving Ruth and Sylvie in the dust. However, Ruth found powerful affinity in silence, waiting, seeing, hearing, and being.
Complex but beautiful prose. One must read slow, especially the long descriptions. Let Marilynne Robinson teach you how to sense the divine in nature.
