The Best wasn't Good Enough?

Jeanne Avery's book on astrological aspects is one of the very best books I've found that describes in REAL LANGUAGE what an aspect FEELS like.
Avery uses vivid and unforgettable examples from the lives of celebrities and people she knows or has read for. There is something about the way she relates these people describing their OWN feelings that sticks in your mind.
In my beginning days interpreting charts professionally (scarey! back in 85), I often relied on her descriptions of aspects to make my points with clients and invariably the clients were nothing less than astounded with the veracity. For the first time, I could really understand what it felt like to have Mars square Uranus when such a person in her book described it as a sugar high or a sugar addiction, the scratch that could never be itched, etc.
And I remember the Pluto Mars person in her book saying her son infuriated her so much that her husband had to hold her hands to her side to keep her from doing violence to him while she literally SHOOK WITH RAGE.
In my beginning practice, I actually had people break down in tears of gratitude when I used these analogies for them to help them understand the difficult energies they were dealing with -- they were so moved that FINALLY someone seemed to understand what they were going through.
It's a real shame this book didn't get reprinted because you can see that I found it quite invaluable. It takes awhile as a pro to build up enough case experience to have your own set of "snapshots" to use in illustrating aspects and Avery has some really, truly wonderful ones. Good illustrations of energy during a chart interpretation/reading build instant empathy with the client and that builds good rapport for anything important that is going to follow. It's part of the magic of astrology.
I would certainly recommend chasing this book down in the used section if you are considering a career in astrology.

This cookbook has wonderful recipes for meat, veggies and fish! And they are so easy to make! Detailed review follows...

This book about STEAMING FOODS is just what I needed! Before I decided to purchase this book, I looked into other STEAMER Kindle books (reading the samples) and none I could find were as helpful as this book. Below I state why I am so happy now that I found this book:

1) There is a section called Vegetable Sides - This is my favorite section in this cookbook because it covers the most popular veggies. The recipes are just superb and I love that it gives the time it takes for each veggie for steaming.

2) Since I am in the process of learning how to use a steamer, this book describes the different types of steamers: Electric, Stove Top Steamers (I have an insert adjustable basket that I use in saucepans), and Bamboo steamers. In this section, each type is covered.

3) Another section that I found so very helpful is the steaming tips section. In this section, she covers how much water to place into the steamer, be sure to defrost meat before steaming; all food should be cut to same size and more.

4) The section that has The Cooking Guide is another favorite of mine because all types of foods are covered and how long to steam them. It even includes how long to steam noodles and rice!

5) RECIPES - The recipes for meats, fish and veggies were some of the best that I have found. My favorite recipes in this book include: Lime and Baby Carrots, Lemon Oil Asparagus, Basil Zucchini, Lime and Coconut Lentils, Cumin and Turmeric Cauliflower, and Crushed Butternut Squash.

6) Another superb recipe is Savory Spiced Steamed Rice. This has vegetable stock, mushrooms, red pepper, onion and tomatoes!

7) The Poultry section is excellent! There is a recipe in there for Lemongrass and Ginger Chicken that I tried and it is very, very good! Since I did not find Lemongrass, I used celery instead and LEMON PEPPER SEASONING. The result was just perfect!

For me, I use a steamer insert (adjustable basket type) in my saucepan. However, lately I prefer to use my new electric Aroma combo 6 cup rice cooker and steamer (I purchased this electric Aroma combo rice cooker/steamer here on Amazon for about 23 dollars and it is a steamer and also a rice cooker. This combo unit is perfect for steaming for one or two and I use it everyday!

If you are thinking of steaming foods, this is the book that I suggest to you. For me, I love this very helpful book!

I've always preferred steamed vegetables over boiled because the texture and taste are so much better. Plus it's not waterlogged

I bought myself a steamer (never thought I'd own an electric steamer in my life, but here we are) and I really wanted inspiration.
I've been steaming stuff since I could cook. I've always preferred steamed vegetables over boiled because the texture and taste are so much better. Plus it's not waterlogged. But that's about as far as I had ever gone. Steamed vegetables (Artichokes, broccoli and asparagus, mainly.)
So here I am with a steamer, a growing waistline that I'm eagerly attempting to reduce, and a serious need for inspiration to steam stuff other than 3 types of vegetables. Enter: The Skinny Steamer.
This book is an excellent inspirational tool if you already have any inkling of creativity in the kitchen (and probably also a handy tool if you have absolutely 0% creativity in the kitchen, as it tells you exactly what to do.)
I would never have thought I could make curried lentils and chicken in the steamer, for example. Or potstickers. or dessert. Or a freaking omelette!
I use this book primarily for the cooking times, methods, and general ideas. It's very informative. I tend to experiment drastically with the spices and ingredients. That is the only reason why I don't feel comfortable giving it 5 stars since I tend to alter the recipes so drastically. However, it is definitely a fantastic guidebook for people wanting to cook more with steam (steamerites? steamarians?)

Note: I don't want to diss the recipes how they are. I haven't actually tried any of them exactly how they are presented. So please don't take me saying I experiment with the flavors and ingredients to be a diss on the recipes.

Eh. Nothing to write home about . . .

I was a little disappointed. In essence, it gave me no new information. I can figure out sauces to spread on steamed items. Not as many recipes as I had hoped for. Quality printing and binding; just not that thrilled with info. I was hoping for ideas for whole meal use.

Love this series.. A true love story where the characters have to over come so much to be together... If you love a real very sizzling hot romance this box set is a must read!! This book evokes more then emotion it also evokes hope for anyone who is fighting for love.. This box set will leave you wanting to read more and more of Emilia Winters storie as well as wanting more of Tristian and Noelle.. Don't pass this series up.. Make sure to read her other books as well.. I'm always waiting patiently for her next books..

First time reading Emilia Winters and I really liked her work. I really liked how she would tell the story in Noelles point of view then give a brief look into Tristans. I started it and didn't put it down till it was finished, it was that good. The characters were strong and it wasn't to predictable. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

May your moves end in checkmate

We're just getting started

Overall, this book was a solid read.

This book had me hooked nearly from that start and our heroine Willow is truly a force to be reckon with. I've stepped away from dystopian a bit because it is severely a cluttered genre at this point, but I truly enjoyed this book.

It takes place in a world where the value of a person's life is largely determined by their DNA. People and Ritters are engineered to be stronger, faster, more deadly etc.

We're introduced to an interesting cast of characters with Reece, Aspen, Morry and Fenn to name a few. I loved Aspen the most to be honest because he is just so relaxed and feels so natural. In a book that's somewhat heavy he is a breath of fresh air. Fenn was another character I adored because he is just so sweet and fatherly from the start. I hope he stays that way and doesn't turn out to be playing some sort of game.

Reece I did not like at the start but seeing as he's our girl's main love interest I knew we'd get to know him better. And I do like him by the end of the book. But he has such an air of mystery about him that I am a bit wary still. I could say the same for Morry something about that women just does not sit right.

Lastly, Thess. We did not get to meet him until nearly end of this book. Considering he was suppose to be Willow's fiance I thought we would meet him earlier to be honest. Yet at the same time as I got further and further into the book I had a feeling they were keeping his introduction potentially for when our group came into crisis, and naturally we got just that. Unfortunately, he is not the pleasant sweet jokester his cousin Aspen is. But that is no surprise. He has been groomed to essentially reign supreme. I do hope his relationship with Willow improves though because he could be a really valuable ally to her cause if she can sway him.

At this point, I think this book is a bit more romance focused than dystopian. Which is not necessarily bad because I like the main couple enough. But I'm actually much more interested in all the new technologic advances they've made, along with learning more about the rebels and their cause. Because clearly the government is corrupt. So I suppose it's a matter of seeing who is truly the lesser of two evils.

Looking forward to seeing what lies ahead for our dear Willow and hoping for her that her moves end in checkmate.

Such a unique book!

“A gambit. It's a sacrifice play made at the beginning of a chess game.”

I have two reviewing modes, 1) review immediately because FEELS and 2) review a month later because FEELS. In both cases, I'm either too overwhelmed with feels that I need to talk to someone or I'm too overwhelmed with feels that I need to process the epicness. And there was a lot of epicness here.

Gambit was such a unique book and I love it when authors come up with new ideas to write and amaze the readers, this is also the author's debut novel and way to go CLD, this is how you debut!

I don't like comparing books to other books no matter how similar they are but for this review and in order to make a point I'll have to borrow a few choice words from the X-Men universe. So, Willow's story is set in a dystorian world were people have "mutations" for lack of a better word although it has more to do with DNA and stuff, but let's use a familiar term, like the X-Men universe, that give them powers. Some have Xavier-like powers, tracking other's with powers, everyone's powers are unique and they develop after a certain age, not always being successful, it might actually be fatal for the person. Willow is a tavern's daughter until the day a Core officer appears, looking for something. Willow and Reece hate each other from the get go and it's hilarious and so fun to read, he's cold and professional, literally won't tolerate her behavior, and she is always on his case.

There isn't much to spoil, it does say in the blurb that her identity is in question so I might as well talk about it since it actually happens pretty early. Willow was switched as a baby from the Core city and given to her foster family and someone placed another baby in her place; now that the fraud is exposed just before an arranged marriage took place, the Roanoke family are searching for their biological daughter.

There's a a great world building and a lot of story showing instead of story telling which is lacking in a lot of successful novels so this was so refreshing to read and actually have to be patient until things were revealed instead of falling face first into the story and a sea of brand new information. The story takes the readers to an amazing journey that I enjoyed immensely.

There is a romance somewhere between the dystopian world - that is kickass and actually has a more medieval feel to it but with technology and is taking place in London, we even get a glimpse of the Big Ben - between Willow and someone I won't spoil. But the story made me work for it, I was actually waiting to see how the romance was going to come into the picture, she already has an arranged marriage waiting for her, but she does have a life back home and an almost boyfriend, Asp, which was adorable and so freaking cute! But also, her new life is pretty exciting at the same time, and there is a person I didn't see being into her... all I'm saying is, well played book!

Secondary characters and the rest are just as fascinating, the Ritters were something else, I need more of those creatures please! Every character was awesome to be honest, this was too good!

The writing is amazing, the world building is extraordinaire and the characters have flaws and they are badass, witty and sassy and they are multi-dimensional, I'm honestly scared to read the sequel, I don't know how it can get any better but I'm looking forward to being pleasantly surprised!

GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested.

I don't exactly know what I was expecting when I started reading GAMBIT, but it ended up being way more than I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it.

Willow lives what she considers a normal life with her family in a small village until a military officer shows up and questions her identity. She quickly learns that the normal life she has always loved is about to change and she doesn't see it as for the better. Besides the occasional sixteen-year-old tantrum, I found Willow to be a strong character. I enjoyed her way of thinking and I enjoyed watching her grow into herself and her new life.

If I am 100% honest I seriously hated the romantic interest. He was HORRIBLE to Willow in the beginning and it took me a really long time to get over it and look past it. As I got to know him, I ended up liking him a little more, but I'm not sold on him yet. I am interested to see what he does in book two and if it makes me see him in a whole other light.

GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested. I loved the world and the whole genetic code causing abilities story line really worked for me. There were quite a few side characters that kept things even more interesting than they already were. I think as the series continues they will continue to intrigue me. I am really excited to see what happens next for Willow and hope the wait won't be too long until book two.

About the Author
John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896–1970) was a writer, painter, and political activist. He wrote over forty books, including plays, poetry, novels, biographies, histories, and memoirs. He crafted over four hundred drawings, watercolors, and other artworks.

Dos Passos considered himself foremost a writer of contemporary chronicles. He preferred the moniker of “chronicler” because he was happiest working at the edge of fiction and nonfiction.

Both genres benefited from his mastery of observation—his “camera eye”—and his sense of historical context. Dos Passos sought to ground fiction in historic detail and working-class, realistic dialogue. He invented a multimedia format of songs, newsreels, biographies, third-person fictional narrative, and first-person semi-autobiographical narrative snapshots to convey the frenzy of America’s industrialism and urbanism in the twentieth century. His most memorable fiction—Three Soldiers (1921), Manhattan Transfer (1925), and the U.S.A. trilogy (1938)—possesses the authority of history and the allure of myth. Likewise, he sought to vitalize nonfiction history and reportage with the colors, sounds, and smells documented on his journeys across the globe. �

A stellar memoir by a key member of the Lost Generation. Well worth the investment.

I purchased my copy of "The Best Times" by the great writer, John Dos Passos, last year, and it lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded them. John Dos Passos was a fixture of the Lost Generation and had close ties to his counterparts, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. Through the power of his talent to write Dos Passos brings these great friends of his to life, and takes the readers of this book on a journey through the times he lived in. He speaks of his very first meeting with Hemingway, Scott and Zelda, and speaks with how his friendship with Hemingway came apart because as he put it they grew up by their thirties and in the process grew apart. Surprisingly these two great writers who were once best friends in life managed to correspond and stay in touch over the years, and they never lost their love and admiration or each other. Like Hemingway, Dos Passos was a world traveler, and you will enjoy his trips to Europe and later to Spain, and he brings his destinations and its people to life for his readers. I highly recommend this book. It serves as a nice counterpart to Hemingway's own memoir, "A Moveable Feast".

I have always admired this author's work; reading this memoir made me respect and admire him as a man. His experiences during war were cool and clear which suggests that he had to distance himself from them in order to deal with them. The evolution of his friendships with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, the Murphys was fascinating - I just wish he could have invested his memories with a wee bit more feeling.

About the Author

I.S.P. �Nation is Professor in Applied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to books, his extensive list of publications on teaching and learning vocabulary, language teaching methodology, and curriculum design, includes journal articles, book chapters and book reviews. He has taught in Indonesia, Thailand, the United States, Finland and Japan.

John Macalister is Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He�specialises in the fields of language teaching methodology and curriculum design and�draws on experience�in teacher education and curriculum design in Thailand, Cambodia, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Namibia.

Helpful but wordy

I have several of ISP Nation's English language teaching texts including this one. Nation (often with co-authors, in this case with John Macalister) is a well respected and practical expert in the ESL/EFL/TESOL field. His ideas are always sound and backed up with loads of knowledge about the research findings of many others. He is focussed on principles of language teaching and very critical of the many texts not based on research and current knowledge. For example most texts deal with opposites and morphologically and phonologically similar words together, but Nation points out research that indicates that this can be a source of interference in learning and remembering new vocabulary.

This text is extremely practical and covers all the essential considerations that need forethought and attention when designing a language curriculum. Nation does not recommend a single approach that could be "grafted on" to any existing language teaching and learning situation. The chapters are well-sequenced and contain much helpful advice and many suggestions and ideas for class use. He is blunt about some of the failings of many published course books intended for the language learner.

One quibble I have is with the text itself. In some places it reads as if it were dictated as the sentences ramble on where a couple of short sentences would be clearer. I am an experienced language teacher but found myself having to read some paragraphs aloud to myself in order to be clear about what is the important part of the message. Some careful editing would make the book easier to read and the content easier to grasp. (But it is better than another of Nation's texts: Learning Vocabulary in Another Language which really needs severe editing.)

Another minor quibble is that, as with many references for English language teachers, the examples look mostly at the needs of English learners living in English speaking countries. For those of us working in NES countries it is easy to feel a little overlooked.

But, in general, this text is as helpful as anything I have found for the English language teacher.

Curriculum design made approachable

Language Curriculum Design is a concise, easy-to-follow guide to curriculum design using the latest research. Teachers will find this useful for both ESL and EFL/TESOL contexts among others, and suitable for many different types of teaching. The chapters are short, yet full of useful information for both theory and practice. And bonus, it arrived very promptly!

A Clear Voice in the Debate

It is important to remember that there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to teaching, and certainly not language teaching. Whichever of the main varietals you work with TEFL/TESL/TESOL/LOTE etc. you are always going to find things that don't work, that do work - and then don't work. Teaching any language is a fluid practice that has as much to do with the learners' attitudes/desires/culture/characters/predispositions/fears as it does with the nuts-and-bolts of grammar and syntax.

That established, however, there are certain 'ground rules' - certain mainstays that can give the novice a strong foundation upon which to build - and this texts presents those in a clear, concise, precise and ultimately very readable format. The book is well designed and the kind of reference resource that allows the reader to interact with it, put it down and then come back. The tone of the text is respectful, professional and not at all condescending - so it should suit both those experienced in the field and those new to it too. The chapter lengths are perfect, not too long and cover most bases.

If there is a criticism, then I would say that there needs to be more attention paid to progressive paradigms. Whilst there is a chapter on 'negotiated syllabi' (not syllabuses!!!) As an experienced professional, myself, I personally would have liked a couple more chapters on alternative/democratic/critical/emancipatory approaches to curriculum design - maybe that would be an idea for a follow-up text. The aforementioned said, clearly the book is a practical 'hands-on' life-raft for those charged with language curriculum design and perhaps my area of interest would cause confusion for newcomers.

To summate, an excellent book on a potentially dry topic, clear and concise, lots of food for though and yet lots of confirmations too. A valuable reference for any education professional charged with curriculum development - regardless of your discipline.
