A great intro to a growing industry that deserves serious consideration.

This book is an excellent introduction to the Commercial mortgage industry. It is up to date and the author makes an effort to state the distinction between the residential and commercial mortgage business. He also touches on important and relevant topics such as the sub prime crises and how it effected the mortgage industry and why people should not be afraid to get involved now, as there is ample opportunity. This is for the layperson, and he describes the nuts and bolts of the industry very well. Gineris also makes it easy for the reader to understand the vocabulary and concepts so inherent to the industry. He gets into lending, borrowing, commercial mortgage-backed securities, etc. Albeit, a strong income potential can be realized in a relatively short period of time (comparatively speaking), this is not a get rich quick scheme. But for those who work hard, smart and take this business seriously, one can make physician level income and have a lot of fun doing it.

Completely unhelpful intro into commercial real estate

Let me start off by pointing out that this 190 page book includes 45 blank pages and 11 pages of photographs of what a commercial building looks like. As if we have no idea what an office park or Walmart looks like.
I have over a decade of experience in residential financing and was hoping that this book would help me better understand the commercial end. At best, this could have been a 15 page pamphlet. It is absolutely NOT a $27 book. The advice given over and over again is basic elementary sales advice.
You will gain painfully little from reading this book if you have ANY experience whatsoever in sales or real estate.
Total waste of time.

I thought this book was very educational, and I revert back to it for steps with commercial mortgages. There are a few steps that are missing from the book and is hard to figure out. Just for new people out there entering into the commercial market if you want to get set up with lenders go to [...]. This book answers mountains of questions that you may have, which will lead you to ask a lot more questions. The only thing to do is get out there and start mortgaging.

Grade 5-8 -When her father and brother are taken by the Taliban and her mother and baby brother are killed in a bombing raid during the Afghan war in October 2001, Najmah begins an arduous journey across the border to Peshawar, Pakistan. There, she meets up with an American woman, Nusrat, who has been conducting a school for refugee children while she waits for her husband, Faiz, who has returned to his native country to open medical clinics. For most of the story, the narration alternates between Najmah and Nusrat, allowing readers to see the war's effect on both of their lives. Only when they meet can they come to terms with their losses and move on. However, readers may feel unsatisfied with the ending. Having cared for the characters and been involved in their lives, they will want to know what happens to them. The use of an American allows the author to provide a clearer description of this unfamiliar world, but because Nusrat is a grown woman, her concerns may be of less interest to readers than those of Najmah, an enterprising and enormously courageous girl. Still, Staples brings the world of the refugee camp to life. When her mother and baby brother die in an American air raid, she stops speaking, and, disguised as a boy, makes a perilous journey to a refugee camp in Pakistan. In a parallel narrative, Nusrat (her American name was Elaine), who converted to Islam when she met Faiz in New York, has set up a rough school for the refugees. She has had no news of Faiz, her husband, since he left to establish a clinic in the north. The two stories come together when Najmah and Nusrat meet in the camp, where they wait in anguish for news of the people they love. Staples weaves a lot of history and politics into her story (including information about the Taliban's suppression of women), and she includes a map, a glossary, and brief background notes to give even more context. But as with her Newbery Honor Book, Shabanu (1989), it's the personal story, not the history, that compels as it takes readers beyond the modern stereotypes of Muslims as fundamentalist fanatics. I love reading but the characters that relate to me the most are all dead in the end....so if you don't have any younger siblings or parents I would read this but the parents and little children all die don't read this unless you are for a school assignment because it is very sad an makes me worry about my family and if today is the last time I'll see them.):

About the Author

Jorge L. Ali�, MD, PhD, is Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology and Medical Director of the Alicante Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of Miguel Hern�ndez, Alicante, Spain. He is also founder of the VISSUM Corporation, comprising 40 clinics in Spain and founder of the Jorge Ali� Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness. Dr. Ali� has conducted extensive research work in various areas of ophthalmology and has been the Director of 63 doctoral theses. He has authored almost 450 original articles in indexed peer review journals as well as more than 240 book chapters. He is the author, editor or co-editor of 77 books and has given almost 1400 presentations at international scientific congresses. The Hirsch factor (h-factor) of Dr Alio is 43 (Scopus). He has received 75 awards for clinical and research work, 32 of them at an international level. He was co-founder of the International Ocular Inflammation Society and its Chairman until 1998 and then Secretary to the present day. He has served on the editorial boards of many journals, including the Journal of Refractive Surgery, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, European Journal of Ophthalmology and British Journal of Ophthalmology. In November 2012, Dr. Ali� received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the ISRS/AAO Congress in Chicago.

Joseph Pikkel, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Sieff Hospital, Safed, Israel, a senior lecturer and the head of ophthalmology in the Bar-Ilan faculty of medicine. Since 2009 he has also been a lecturer at Technion – Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Haifa, Israel. It was from this faculty that he graduated in 1991, subsequently serving a residency in the Department of Ophthalmology at RAMBAM Medical Center, Haifa, Israel and a fellowship at Sydney Eye Hospital in Australia. In 1997 he returned to Israel, as a Consultant at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, Hadera, where he performed about 2500 operations and as Medical Director at the “Roim 6/6” institute, where he performed some 5000 refractive surgeries. Dr. Pikkel’s research interests lie in diseases of the vitreous and retina, vitreoretinal surgery and glaucoma. He is a member of the Israeli Council of Ophthalmologists and of the Examination Comity of the Israeli Board of Ophthalmologists. In 2004 he was made an honorary citizen of the cities of Iakucho and Suyana in Peru, where he served as Head of the Israeli Save Sight Delegation, for contributions to citizens’ welfare while operating in local hospitals. He was also operating in save sight delegations in Angola, Congo, Ecuador and Guyana. Dr. Pikkel has authored more than 40 publications in national and international journals.

The algorithm discussions do not depend on any toolkit, allowing ready translations to other environments, as I have found with OpenGL shaders.

Useful either as a reference or as a textbook ... a very accessible textbook in image processing, quite suitable for undergraduate courses Starts with very fundamental concepts of digital images and goes through quite sophisticated algorithms with sound mathematical basis ... providing a deeper understanding of the algorithms.

This will be one my continuing reference books for some time to come.

Content is Great, BUT the Binding is Terrible

I have been purchasing books for 70 of my 77 years,and this offering defies the virtual definition of the 'thing.' The book I have, as well as the one that I gave to a student, is almost physically unreadable. In the 1940's, I was instructed that the binding of every new book and text required a standard 'breaking in.' That process was to insure that when one got to the middle of the read, the binding would not break. Thus, before reading this new book, I tried to process this one ----- and failed miserably. Since, every time I try to read this text, I require two bricks to keep it open to the pages I wished to read. Even with that, this book doesn't even resemble any real text I have purchased over my career. The binding is inflexible. It apparently has a metal backing that provides no spring; thus, I cannot both read and take notes which is my normal habit when reading a text. The first English edition was bound in the old manner - it had half the pages and a much more flexible binding. Further, as if to want to make reading as difficult as possible the margin of the pages at the binding are hardly a centimeter, and without a vice to level the page of interest, 2/3 of the page rises from the binding at the center of the book in an arc with a radius less than 2-3 cm and doesn't get close to flat until one reaches the 56-57mm margin on the outside of the page. In this wide margin the printer decided to place the captions of figures RATHER than reducing that margin to a reasonable 25mm or less. So, what I have is a tome whose design is apparently meant to prevent copying AS WELL AS READING! Now, if I wanted to copy the pages, I would 'clip' off the binding and run the pages through any scanner in bulk pieces. REALLY! That being true, I must conclude that, either the 'series editors' or some anonymous 'person' must really despise the authors and their potential readers. Sadly, the authors, the readers, and the sellers are duped by the publisher, in this case, who probably doesn't have quality control at home; for surely, no one educated in either the US or Germany could fail to see the shortcomings of this product. Of course, since I only speak of two purchases, I might have been the one who got the only two 'rascal' products that escaped the QC folks at "Springer!" By the way, those parts of the text that I have laboriously read are top notch. Thanks for that, at least. If I cannot find a way to comfortably read this volume, I may decide to excise the offending binder so that I can read the pages in a way that is reasonable - at least for me. BTW, I also have John Russ's "The Image Processing Handbook, 6th Ed," from CRC, 2011. The binding of this 867 page book is bound in the 'proper' manner that enables flat pages at the middle both of whose margins are only 13mm. A most comfortable book to read and learn from. I wish I knew sufficient about the psychology of the recent leaders at Springer, and I hope that they were not hired away from CRC. That would cause me to lose hope completely.

Priceless resource for toe stubbing Java-newbie-but-programming-oldie

I come to Java and ImageJ with a long-entrenched array-based programming background with pseudo-OO design. The leap to Java and ImageJ has been challenging and a rather steep climb for me. This book has really helped me over the hump not only in terms of Java constructs and ImageJ's architecture, but also in terms of providing a clear road map for good OO design. It may not have been the intention of the authors to provide lessons in OO design, but that is the chief value of this very readable book for me. In particular, I have found Chapter 11 (binary object analysis) extremely useful in my own work. In fact, I have re-engineered much of my own code based upon what I learned in this one chapter. I am looking forward to the portions on frequency analysis. My only wish is that the English translation had been ready when I started with Java and ImageJ three years ago - I might have greatly shortened my programming path. I encourage all ImageJ users to give Digital Image Processing a serious look, and to add it to the toolkit.

About the Author
Brantly Womack is Professor of Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, and has been named an honorary professor at Jilin University in Changchun and East China Normal University in Shanghai. He is the author of Foundations of Mao Zedong's Political Thought and Politics in China (with James Townsend), and the editor of a number of books, including Contemporary Chinese Politics in Historical Perspective (Cambridge University Press, 1991). After receiving his BA Magna cum Laude in Politics and Philosophy from the University of Dallas in 1969, Womack began studying Chinese while on a Fulbright Scholarship in Philosophy to the University of Munich. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago, where Tang Tsou was his mentor. After post-doctoral studies at the Contemporary China Center of the University of California, Berkeley, he taught at Northern Illinois University and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London before going to the University of Virginia. He has served as Director of the East Asia Center, Chair of the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, and Director of the University's International Activities Planning Commission. He has made frequent visits to China since 1978 and to Vietnam since 1985, and has published articles comparing their politics and exploring their relationship in World Politics, Government and Opposition, the China Journal, Asian Survey, Pacific Affairs, and elsewhere. His articles on asymmetry in international relations have appeared in the Journal of Strategic Studies, the Journal of Contemporary China and Pacific Affairs.

Eye opening

This book is astonishing in it's scholarship and depth. It's not the sort of thing you take to bed for a light read after a hard day. The information is densely packed and most pages contained at least a few spots where I had to stop and ponder the implications of what I'd just read. Like poetry, there's hardly a word that could be left out. I wouldn't recommend this to just anyone, but for those interested in either or both countries, Womack's brilliant and lucid description of the very human factors propelling international relations, the motives, fears and misunderstandings behind the headlines, will cause you to see China and Vietnam in a richer and more vital way.
