"The Compliments Pass When The Quality Meet"

Brendan Behan's memoir of his time incarcerated in England , is a comical, sympathetic and humanistic work of art. As a young IRA member arrested in Liverpool at the age of 16 in possession of explosives he demonstrated a remarkably fatalistic viewpoint for someone so young and seemed to take in the experience as an observant participant in a human drama without a hint of self pity.

As he begins in a remanded prison before his transfer to London and ultimately to a Borstal (reform school) he meets with a variety of characters both fellow prisoners and "screws" or guards and they populate his story that also includes incredibly detailed descriptions of the routine of a life behind bars.

Behan became famous as a playwright and notorious drinker in his later years and died tragically young apparently from years of heavy drinking. He is a writer of great insight and power and should not be missed by anyone interested in Irish literature.

Fun read!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gives a unique insight into Behan's life, his experience in prison and reformatory school, and his Irish upbringing. Parts are brilliant and humorous, parts depict the mundane life of incarceration, and parts are painful to read, like a "Ringsend uppercut." The self-proclaimed "drunk with a writing problem" can certainly write. Glad I read his book.

Felix endures the usual silver bullets and garlic, as well as several very human double crosses and miscalculations, before the story speeds to an unlikely conclusion that exposes a somewhat unconvincing villain. The novel's true appeal lies in its zippy banter and witty repartee on vampire lifestyle, particularly in Felix's ongoing partnership with Coyote, a low-rent vamp from the barrio. 'Tis a novel worth picking up if....

If you answer yes to most of these questions, then you should buy this book and read it. It is that simple:

1. Do you like humor? More importantly, so you like some subtle humor in books that you read? Would you like to chuckle or be amused during a story?

2. Do you like "flawed" characters? Characters that have something wrong with them? Well the main character in this story is a blood sucking kinda guy who is allergic to sunlight and has a strong aversion to human blood.

3. Do you like a good adventurous story where "things happen" and they don't take a long time to get going?

4. Do you like sex? or at least, do you recognize that there are certain desires that just about everyone has? Well this novel is full of innuendos. It is not a porno novel. The title might suggest that they are doing it on every other page. Not true. That isn't to say that something did not happen, but I'll leave that up to you to read.

I found this to be a fun entertaining adventure. More importantly I really enjoyed the "twist" that it gave to the standard vampire tale. It suggests a few new ways of looking at things. The second novel is just about as fun as his first one, so it's worth considering the series.

LOved it, messed up, funny

The entire series is great, funny brutal, way out there.....but for some reason the term blunt tooth riles me. If I were in this book Id go down fighting as a hunter rather than become a being that forgot its origins.
But thats just my opinion, Awsome job my friend.

As such, it sports a host of buzzwords like "ideal performance state" (IPS), "competitive adjective profile" (CAP), and "adaptation threshold" to communicate its simple message. Toughness training aims to improve an individual's emotional flexibility, responsiveness, strength, and resiliency through imaging activities, emotional response practice, and "acting the way you want to feel." "Tough" phrases, principles, messages, and lessons are frequently set out in special type. Self-help books have an audience, and public libraries might want to consider this title by a well-known sports psychologist.

Brilliant and Simple>>>>

This book is a very useful tool for any aspiring athlete. Some of it is obvious and some it is quarky but altogether it is very useful. And I'm certain that if one applies these techniques you will see big gains. This book helped me understand my emotions as they relate to my sport. And it gave me ways to be a tough thinker and a actor. Everyone knows its important to try and be tough but not everyone knows how. This book has just about everything you need to know to take you game to the next level.

If your short on time skip through and just read chapters 1,7,9,11, 14 and 15. Theres 18 chapters total.

Toughness training for the mind

I have purchased at least 20 copies of this outstanding book over the last
15 years. I have given them to athletes I was training, and later to
athletes I've met along life's path. This is a wonderful resource for
anyone, actually, and not just athletes. What I found especially
encompassing is the fact that author Loehr writes knowledgeably about
our greatest competition: ourselves. He challenges us to take on
our demons and obstacles for what they are -- hindrances to our personal
success.

This is a great little book. I highly recommend it to coaches, parents
and athletes alike.

As in Base's Animalia , his lush, intricately detailed illustrations in The Eleventh Hour comprise a sort of visual hide-and-seek. Here, the stakes are clues to the solution of a mystery: Who has surreptitiously eaten the feast prepared for Horace the Elephant's 11th birthday party? The culprit could be any of a number of exotically costumed animal guests, from a pig dressed as an admiral to a pair of giraffes in tutus to a zebra gone punk. The fun of poring over the pictures for hidden messages and significant particulars is, happily, matched by the enjoyment derived from the text--witty, ingenious verses that ably skirt the singsong or mundane. It will take an exceptionally persistent sleuth to deduce the thief's identity; many readers may resort to breaking the seal to the "top secret" solution. Thus enlightened, those returning to the scenes of the crime may still find some clues difficult to discern; in particular, the large number of concealed "mice" are almost impossible to make out. But it is, as Base points out, the thrill of the chase that matters most; and on this count the work scores high marks. All ages.

Grade 3-6-- This picture book is a puzzle mystery written in verse. When Horace the elephant turns 11, he decides to throw an elaborate birthday party and invites 11 friends. The animal guests arrive in costume, and entertain themselves with a variety of activities until it is time to eat. When the 11th hour arrives, however, they are horrified to find that the entire feast has been eaten. All guests protest their innocence, and Horace comes through with sandwiches to save the day. What remains is for readers to discover the culprit. "The Inside Story," a sealed section of pages containing the solution to the mystery and explanations of the plethora of clues and puzzles in the book, follows the story. Intricate watercolor and acrylic paintings in vibrant colors crowd each page, assaulting readers with activity and detail. Both text and paintings are framed by black-and-white decorative borders that provide still more detail. After either breaking a code through careful observation (very, very careful, one must assume) or checking "The Inside Story," readers will uncover the identity of the villains. They are hidden everywhere: in the borders and in the body of the illustrations, but only very patient, persistent children will be motivated to detect every one of them. --Corinne Camarata, Port Washington Public Library, NY

An engrossing mystery for fun book lovers

I first encountered this book while babysitting, many years ago. It was the kids' new favorite book (they were aged 6-10 perhaps). I read it to them & was enchanted with it (they just liked the story). I put the kids to bed & proceeded to spend 3+ hours (and I was a TV-loving young adult) trying to solve all the riddles & the find the answer to the mystery. I finally figured it out, but later, when I read the previously sealed "who-dunnit" section, I realized how much I'd missed in fantastically re-created architecture & secreted clues & jokes. The author/illustrator is incredibly imaginative & incorporates amazing artistry. I was totally engrossed & completely hooked. The family who introduced me to this book felt strongly about providing intelligent, stimulating & highly creative resources to their children. Since then I have bought this as a gift more than once... The story is simple & rhymes pleasantly so that it is appealing to children. The pictures are complex & fantastic to look at. However, I'm sure the wonder & adventure I found is lost on many children & adults. They may not have the patience or love of mystery that I do, but perhaps they could grow into it, certainly, over time, new discoveries would appear to even the most uninterested reader.

A fantastic book!

My mother first bought this book in 1989. She didn't know about anything about Graeme Base, but was greatly impressed by the illustrations and got it for my siblings and I to pore over. Not only were the illustrations lively and BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL, but the mystery itself was so cleverly set up! I never would have guessed...actually we did correctly guess who it was, but we had no idea how until after we opened the seal in the back. Once we did, we realized we didn't know the half of it. By the way, did anybody ever find out the name of the Swan? Because my older sister did, and that was even harder to figure out than "Who Stole The Feast?" (Here's a hint, and I hope it doesn't give the answer away: The Card Game) I guarantee if you buy this book, you will NOT be disappointed!
P.S. "Animalia" was pretty good, too!

What a great read! Great storyline, a moving plot, and sufficient twists and turns to keep you reading. I cheered on the main character throughout the entire book. The best part was that it was a clean read, and I'd feel comfortable passing it on.

Worthy of book club discussion

I had never read such an explicit account of the London blitz. I had read about it but never so completely felt it. That in itself was worth reading the book. The story of Lisa as she is sent from Nazi Germany by kindertransport to England and of her life as a hated German to many and a loved daughter by others. I don't understand why this book has not come out in Paper. It is so worth discussion by book clubs.

Best book I have read in quite a while

This is a great read! Especially if you like stories related to World War II as I do. Lisa is a 14-year-old Jewish girl sent by her parents from Germany to England when the Nazi threat was looming large in their homeland. She stays first with a childless British couple in London and becomes very close to them and they to her. Then, while caught outside during a German blitz air attack, she is hit on the head and loses her memory. The next part of the story is a whole new chapter for her life. I won't say anymore to spoil the surprises and there are some! Very well written, no misspellings (unless you count British spelling!) or grammar goofs. I really like this author and plan to read more of her books.

Great resource for smart, practical advice on managing a tech career

As a relative newcomer to the technical workforce (specifically game development), this book has been a godsend. I've recommended it to both women and men who are starting off in the industry, as it's one of the better career development books I've come across.

I first read this book over the course of a few days, and often return to reference particular sections as I need them. This book has detailed instructions and advice for individuals in all stages of a tech career, from getting your foot in the door to salary negotiation to starting your own company. It's particularly no-nonsense, and doesn't shy away from insisting that you be able to back up your networking with a strong understanding of your field or discipline. If you're willing to work hard, this book will help you do so in a smart way that lays the groundwork for success in the future.

The personal essays included from contributors across the industry are wonderful. I didn't follow a "traditional" career path into tech and sometimes feel like an outsider to the industry. The impressive women who contributed to this book have a variety of backgrounds, interests, and experiences, and you'll likely find a mirror of your own experience in one of theirs.

Originally, I borrowed this book from the library; but, only a few chapters in I knew I needed to own it. Tarah's advice is direct, applicable and honest, and the sections by other women in tech paint a broad picture of the working life for women across the industry. As someone transitioning into the tech industry, I anticipate this book will be a go-to reference for many years. Thank you Tarah and contributors!

Good for any gender at any stage of your career

I've been in tech for over two decades, and I recognize that not all people of today have come into the same industry as I did, or by the same sideways manner - for women or men just starting out, this book has excellent advice on how to understand the world and industry around you. For women or men managing those just starting out, it helps clarify the perceptions that may be coming from you, your team, your company. For me it helped me focus on what I needed to tackle next, to change the world. Not every chapter or piece will resonate with everyone, but everyone will find a nugget or two relevant to where they are, or where they want to be. Good job!

My husband--I am not pleased to say--and a college friend used to get a lot of mileage out of the fact that they were the only two people on earth who seemed to know the meaning of the word callipygian ("having nicely shaped buttocks"). If only Depraved English had been available to them then, they would have had a whole lexicon for their agastopia ("the admiration of a part of someone's body"). But this book isn't just for those who are pygophilous-er, "fond of buttocks." It's the best source out there when you're looking for that special word to describe the involuntary blurting of animal noises (aboiement) or the spit-out juice from chewing tobacco (ambeer). It's also invaluable when you're looking for that perfect term to describe someone who has deep cleavage (bathycolpian), is prone to farting (bdolotic), or has runaway armpit perspiration (maschalephidrosis). Just don't let it fall into the hands of some gambrinous ("full of beer"), college-age gynopipers (they who "stare lewdly at women"). --Jane Steinberg

lexicography yes, humor no

This book brought me a handful of half-hearted chuckles, but not one serious belly laugh. Beyond the "oh my goodness" smirking over a book containing so many "unmentionables", there just really isn't much to it.
It's a small book, with big type, lots of white space and illustrations, so there aren't really that many words here. And the authors therefore felt the need to pad it further with sample sentences showing the words in "humorous" context. These examples were almost always predictable and rarely added anything to the definition.
"beray /bee RAY/ v. - To splatter with feces. 'After getting berayed yet again, Ted the zookeeper made a grim vow: one day he would get even with those damn monkeys.'"
Did you laugh? I didn't.
This book is all very tasteful and proper - the illustrations are 18th century etchings, the representative characters all named Percy and Roderick - and I found this decidedly boring.
For my money, the British "Roger's Profanisaurus" (available at Amazon.co.uk) left this stilted volume in the dust.

"Wordsworth" Knowing

"Depraved English" is a marvelous book, for both young and old. It would come as no surprise to hear that the SAT folks in Princeton were scanning it for a more interesting "800" score challenge!
In any case, it certainly would have enhanced my appreciation of the Wordsworthian Lyrical Ballads if a word or two from "Depraved English" had been incorporated into this famous work. "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" would have had an additional timeless vigor and gusto!
Like a fellow reviewer mentions, I too, first came across the word "callipygian" ("having nicely shaped buttocks")in my college (sic)"daze". My source was another literary gem entitled "Mrs. Byrnes' Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure and Obsolete Words" (which I believe is unfortunately no longer available). And of course, don't forget "steatopygic" (an extreme accumulation of fat on the buttocks). I reckon that the beauty of life is that each, in their own right, are words of the "pygophilous".
Wahtever your passions, whatever your tastes, "Depraved English" is a full course meal for word epicureans. Bonne Appetite!

funny and smart

Everyone has, at some point, lost a good chunk of time poring over the dictionary in search of new, unusual and even bizarre. These guys did just that and compiled them. Many of the words are sexual in nature, but not all are sophomoric. What I love about the book is that for each word, they write a sentence or more about that word. Sometimes they put the word in a sentence, to put it in better context, other times they explain it or give you some commentary. The book is both hilarious and serious at the same time. Good intellectual fun, bringing new meaning to "increasing your vocabulary."
