About the Author
Charles I. Jones is the STANCO Professor of Economics at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1993. He is well known for his research and papers on long-run economic growth. Jones is equally well known as an educator with a gift for distilling complicated subjects down to their essence and making them accessible to all levels of students. He is the author of Introduction to Economic Growth, Third Edition (2013).

Disorganized presentation of key results

We used this book in a course where I TA-ed. I would not recommend it (except in a specific circumstance described below).

The main problem is that key results are not presented effectively. Many important results are presented "on the way" or "at the same time" as highlighting some real world event. So at the same time that students are learning about an event (perhaps for the first time), they are also learning new things about the model itself. I do not like this "multi-tasking" approach, since it divides students' attention. While it is essential for students to see models applied to real situations, I would rather the book proceed more stepwise, to let students focus on one task at a time.

This can also be annoying when flipping through the book for quick reference. Sometimes, the result you're looking for is buried inside a section that's nominally about an event. I sometimes need to flip through a few times before finding the key result that I want to show to students. This book is also not the best at reminding readers of notation -- some of which is specific to this book rather than universal. This can be annoying when not in the original chapter that an equation is presented.

What this book does well is it is mathematically rigorous and covers material almost more like a graduate-level course. It can be a good preview for students who have already learned in this material in some form, and want a preview of what macroeconomics is like at the graduate level and beyond. Many of the real world examples and case studies included are also highly policy relevant. (Credit to Jones for doing this well.)

Still, too many things need to improve that I cannot recommend this book overall.

About the Author
Lee A. Segel (1932-2005) was a Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, where he served as Chairman of Applied Mathematics, Dean of Mathematical Sciences, and Chairman of the Scientific Council. He was an Ulam Scholar at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the Santa Fe Institute, where he continued his work on complex adaptive systems. He served as editor or editorial board member of six journals.

Leah Edelstein-Keshet is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Her book Mathematical Models in Biology was republished in SIAM s Classics in Applied Mathematics series.

Very well Structured textbook

I am using this book for an undergraduate course on Mathematical modeling applied to biological phenomena.

I found that the text is very clear, the increase in complexity of the examples is gradual so that students have to problem following the content. The text also offer a fair number of well thought exercises.

About the Author
Phil Jones is a strategy and performance management specialist. He has worked in the UK, Europe, the US and Far East for organizations ranging from multi-nationals, FTSE100, SMEs, to start-ups. In the public sector he has helped organisations that include City Councils, MoD, NHS Trusts, the Department for Work and Pensions and Strategic Health. Phil's background includes a corporate strategy planning role and in the management team of a dot.com as well as extensive management consultancy experience with the niche consultancy Renaissance set up by Norton & Kaplan (authors of the original balanced scorecard books) as well as both KPMG and Price Waterhouse. He now runs Excitant Limited to help organisations turn strategy, into performance and results through their people.

Not the gem I'd hoped for

I have been trying to read this book for many months. I've taken it on a good few airline flights and read all of it one way or another. But it's been a struggle. Because of the title I know I should love it. However, despite the author's well-meaning efforts, it failed to excite me.

Maybe the stupid cover illustrations got our relationship off on the wrong foot. (The back cover is similar to the front but with the cans on strings coming out of computer screens.) I realise the author may have had no say in this, but surely someone associated with the publication has heard Bill Quirke's little ditty that "information travels over wires but communication happens between the ears". Anyhow, screaming the strategy into a one way channel is not the way to go.

It's not that there is anything particularly "wrong" about the book. New practitioners may well find it helpful. It wanders around a vast number of aspects of internal communication and discusses each reasonably thoroughly in a paperback of 10 chapters over 179 pages. Lots of it is common sense, much is interesting, and there is the odd gem. The best part by far is a detailed five page table covering the features, advantages and disadvantages of various channels.

In short, it's not the wonderful guidebook to communication strategy I had anticipated. My suggestion is to have a careful look at the contents before you buy. It is well set out with subheadings, lists, tables and diagrams though. If you are interested in learning all about communicating strategy the guru is Lester Potter. His "The Communication Plan: The Heart of Strategic Communication" (Third edition, USD159 from IABC) may be a better bet.

Thank you, Phil, for giving us what no one else has to date - practical, no nonesense techniques and guidance for turning strategy in action. We all know that execution is the hard part, and this book is all about this challenging aspect. It includes other vital information on key topics such as change management and the essentials of interpersonal communication, brining the reader an up to date synthesis of the latest thinking. A must read, because you won't find such thorough information anywhere else.

About the Author
Marko Kloos is a novelist, freelance writer, and unpaid manservant to two small children. He is a graduate of the Viable Paradise SF/F Writers' Workshop. Marko writes primarily science fiction and fantasy because he is a huge nerd and has been getting his genre fix at the library ever since he was old enough for his first library card. In the past, he has been a soldier, a bookseller, a freight dock worker, a tech support drone, and a corporate IT administrator. A former native of Germany, Marko lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two children. Their compound, Castle Frostbite, is patrolled by a roving pack of dachshunds.

Echos of Heinlein and Huxley

This book is extremely readable and engaging. I finished it quickly and felt disappointed that it ended and I am hoping for this to grow into a series. The book is a classic "Hero's Journey" storyline, and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" and noted a lot of the differences. Instead of Heinlein's "Citizen/Civilian" political dynamic that led to an almost "utopia" found in the classic "Starship Troopers" we find the results of generational welfare taken to the logical conclusion as the base setting for "Terms of Enlistment." The grit, dirt, and ugliness of the socialist dole life remind me of Huxley's "Brave New World" in dealing with the underclass. But the book is not about economics or politics, those settings are only there to explain the rational of characters which the setting does admirably.

The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.

Out the "self-publish" league
By no so-called
Fine SF novel. Money well spent. Good entertainment, engrossing and real. Better than second-tier work from folks like Silverberg or whoever. Solid, visual, no-fat writing. Great technical skill at describing action, and he makes the most of his strengths. Strictly mature professional, no self-indulgence or slack, no major false moves, quite a trick for a guy with no editor. I didn't notice the prose at all, which is the highest praise there is for guys whose names don't end in Vance or Plunkett. Three or four minor "continuity errors", but nothing story-critical. I was uncomfortable with how comfortable the characters were inflicting casualties on massively outgunned opponents, but combat is ugly stuff by nature and that's a matter of taste. And they get chewed up real good soon enough (loose end there, though). It's a bit episodic, like any military fiction -- the characters have to go where they're told, though a clever enough plotter could make that work to his advantage, I'm sure. High concept: SPACE MARINES SEINFELD!!!!!

It doesn't rise to the first rank: It doesn't rattle your head -- though chapter thirteen starts off pretty intense. Characterization isn't deep. Not a whole lot of detailed interior life or conflict, or anyway not much that stuck in my head. More than the Lensman novels, though! But none of Smith's vast lunatic sweep and grandeur, either. Tight, focused, practical, concrete. With that kind of thing, I'd like a little (I said little) more interior agony b.s. in the mix, or some weirder stuff that'd grab you by the nuts more, but if the author just gives us more of the same next time out, I'll happily buy that and gobble it up. He is who he is. Maybe blow up some bigger stuff. The author is very good at describing stuff blowing up and bad things happening without sounding amateurish or perfunctory. I'd like to see him wreck the s#� t out of some Iain-Banks-scale toys.

So that's the deal. Good old fashioned gripping readable military adventure SF, without any Dicksonian mystical twaddle. I'll re-up (HURR HURRR HURRRRR) for the sequel.

It's horrifying this doesn't have a publisher. It's a quality professional SF novel, better than 95% (UPDATE: 99%) of the field these days.

Two different stories and I only liked one of them

I started reading this novel and was amazed at how good it was. The storytelling was taut and realistic and I very much enjoyed it. I was drawn in by the main character and I was looking forward to what looked like it would be a Starship Troopers-style character evolution.
Then he kills a bunch of civilians in collateral damage (justifiably, I am not criticizing his actions, he had no choice) and suddenly he's in the space Navy with his girlfriend and then all character evolution stops dead in its tracks.
At that point, instead of an interesting and engrossing book that examines terrestrial politics, we get an incredibly UNrealistic alien invasion novel with no character advancement and cardboard cutouts as characters. I don't know why the author chose this path but it was very disappointing. If he had done this whole book with the POV character in the TA fighting on Earth, trying to trace down where the rioters in Detroit got military weapons, that would have been an awesome novel, particularly for a first timer. Instead, we got half an awesome novel and half a cheesy alien story.
Too bad. I would have given five stars to that OTHER novel...

The papers cover theoretical and foundational aspects of computational intelligence and related disciplines with special focus on swarm intelligence and are devoted to behavioral models of social insects and new algorithmic approaches, empirical and theoretical research in swarm intelligence, applications such as ant colony optimization or particle swarm optimization, and theoretical and experimental research in swarm robotics systems.
