About the Author
Olivia Summers is a certified yoga instructor who has been practicing for more than 15 years. She considers yoga her life calling and enjoys teaching her craft to students everyday in her home studio. It is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding parts of her life and she feels fortunate that she gets to share her passion with all of her students and readers.

Ever since starting yoga she has seen so many positive and life enhancing benefits from it. She has experienced first hand the profound growth yoga brings to it's practitioners not just physically but also mentally and spiritually. She enjoys seeing the wonderful improvements in peoples life through yoga. Improvements such as being more mindful, having more energy and living happier more authentic lives. It's experiencing these amazing life changes that keep her motivated to continue teaching and writing on the topics of yoga and well being in general.

Not only has yoga been a great stress reliever and positive force in her life, but it's also led her to live a more mindful life. She spends each morning after waking up meditating, speaking her gratitudes and visualizing. These habits have taught her to be more mindful in each moment and to look for the positive in every situation.

Her true purpose in life is to give others the same opportunities to experience amazing life changes that she has had through practicing yoga and living a healthier lifestyle. That's why she started writing--"An insatiable need to share all that I've learned with the world".

Not bad, but the black and white photos are not too great. I'm not finding myself reaching for this as a reference very much. Its inexpensive though, so that's good.

it is mired in bad, or no editing

I recently bought this book, and while helpful I couldn't help but feel as if I was being talked to as a three year old. Of course I am going to get out of it what I want, however I wish the author would have spent an extra day proof-reading before printing. For what little assistance there is; it is mired in bad, or no editing, and I am speaking of things that change meaning... For example

"The reason for this is because when you throw your body right into static stretching before your muscles have had a chance to catch up and get pliable, you actually reduce the effectiveness of more dynamic movements and REDUCE the risk of injury".

I'm quite certain she meant increase the risk of injury which entirely changes the meaning. This is one of many, and while some may say you're being over harsh on your analysis, I feel that if I'm spending money to buy a book from you that you can have the respect for your audience to edit it. It's very distracting to read something you're trying to learn when it's poorly written.

Stay in the relationship

I purchased this book for my grandkids because several were experiencing relationship troubles. I felt it was because, as girls, they believed they had to "love" the guy enough and part of that was excepting abuse to "show their love." Teaching my girls to learn to respect their own rights is so very important because I wasn't taught that when I grew up. This book gets the job done. They may not get all the Respect Me Rules down right away, but it will plant a seed and I pray that they learn it is not OK for their dates to mistreat them. I recommend it for anyone trying to help another learn respect and the best part is, they encourage couples to stay together--not get out, like other books do about this topic.

Finally a book on abusive relationships that can be used by everyone.

As a behavioral health clinician for the past 30 years, clients that were in abusive relationships seemed to never run out of reasons they stayed with the abuser. While I was able to provide emotional support and a few good ideas, I wish I had had a copy of "Respect me Rules" by Michael and Shelly Marshall to keep me on track.

This 160 page book is an excellent tool for the clinician or someone suffering the various forms of abuse that can be dished out by a partner. Too often I was caught up with trying to understand why a person stayed when I should have been more focused on ways to curtail the ongoing abuse. The "Respect me Rules" offer good practical advice a person can use to shape up a partner's behaviors. I will be using the book as a guide I can follow in therapy sessions and sharing it as a workbook with clients.

I would offer this word of caution for a person who wants to start using the book on their own. The relationship usually gets worse before it gets better, as the authors point out, when the partner escalates their abusive behaviors as a way to try and maintain control. If you are not working with a therapist, it would be best if you arranged a regular check in routine with a trusted friend, a member of the clergy or a member of your extended family to assure them you are ok.

It's all logical things, but unfortunately as a target of an abuser, you are not in a logical frame of mind. This book is full of affirmations and truths that are good to contemplate on. It has some good advice and lots of reminders even if you already know what the abuse cycle is about and you're on the road to healing. Many things are repetitious if you've read on the subject, but it is still worth the cost of the book.

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where respect was the norm. We don't. For many understanding, expecting, or demanding respect is a difficult concept -- that's where this book comes in. Knowledge is power -- your power -- your control of yourself!

About the Author

The author, a young woman of the Jewish heritage, teaches young adults in Brooklyn, New York. Her interest in the Holocaust and her imaginative spirit combined with her deep interest in the psychology of teens led to the inspirational work, The Silent Sister, her literary debut.

Anne and Margot Frank’s tragic account touched the author’s heart, as a fellow Jew and as a young woman coming of age. Ms. Mizrahi, who graduated from Brooklyn College with an M.A. in literature, lives in Brooklyn, NY with her three boys and dear husband.

Fiction but true

This brilliant and compassionate book made me laugh cry love Margot love Anne again seeing her from a different light and made me feel grief at all the loss.
The book sheds lught into the darkness and hell yet is uplifting without excessively gentling down the unimaginable or omforting where comfort is inappropriate.
The author uses fiction to share truth.
It should be shared by book clubs and be a bestseller and be read as widely as possible
And to Mazal please write more you have the gift.

Not entirely accurate

I have only read the excerpts of book shown above, but I have done extensive research on Anne Frank and actually met or spoke to all survivors (Hannah, Jacque and Hello). Right off the bat, the author does not use the correct name of Helmut "Hello" Silberberg. Perhaps it was the author's intention to not use real names, but then why use a name so close to the real one? I am forwarding this book title to him and the others to see if they were contacted or even know of this publication. Seems a shame to go to the trouble of writing a book based on "fact" and not taking advantage of people who actually knew Margot, including an Anne Frank expert who assisted me in the writing of my award-winning play GOODBYE MEMORIES. Laureen Nusbaum was a close friend of Margot and lived in the same building as the Franks.

About the Author

Itzik Ben-Gan is a principal mentor and a founder of SolidQ. A Microsoft MVP for SQL Server since 1999, Itzik teaches and consults internationally on T-SQL querying, programming, and query tuning. He has written numerous articles for SQL Server Magazine and MSDN, and speaks at industry events such as Microsoft TechEd, DevWeek, PASS, and SQL Server Connections.

The best intro book for T-SQL, period!

This book is a masterpiece. It teaches you the fundamentals of T-SQL, while showing you the logic and set theory behind. A good approach, in my opinion, because T-SQL is based on set theory; ignoring that, makes developers to write T-SQL code in a programatic way, causing horrible performance issues and long running queries that take an eternity to finish. As a DBA, I've seen this over and over again, usually from developers that do not know how to think in sets.

The book relies on a dummy database that you should create on SQL 2012 and each chapter uses that code to elaborate all the concepts.

Each chapter ends with few exercises so if you already created the dummy database, you can (and should) start writing T-SQL code right away and validate what you read while learning how to think in sets during the process.

One of the things I like most of this book is that while this is a T-SQL book, Itzik keeps it vendor neutral (or tries to) so when the code deviates of the SQL standard, he warns you about it. That's good, because in case you need to start writing code for MySQL, Oracle or any other vendor, you are already aware of those differences or you wrote code that does not deviate too much of the regular SQL ANSI standard.

Do I recommend this book? Yes, I do, no doubt about it, but only if you do not own the SQL 2008 version. Otherwise, I see no point on getting this one. To be honest, It is basically the same book with the SQL 2012 title on it; the only difference I've seen so far is references to Window Functions, which are briefly covered on Chapter #7. Besides that, it is basically a reprint of the same nice book, but with different title.

Good resource - not a college text for an introductory course

The author, an expert in the field, publishes his first introductory book on TSQL, and although the title 'T-SQL Fundamentals' is representative of the content, the use of the book for a college textbook leaves room for improvement. I used this book for a 3-hr IT credit course this semester at a local community college...the book does have good information. The problems are in that 1) the order of introduction is not optimal, 2) the explanations via pictorials or diagrams for a pure beginner are lacking, and 3) the example code could be better.

First off, to address the order, he introduces right away in chapter 1 and chapter two concepts that I would not introduce until much later for a beginning TSQL class. Foreign Key relationships and Windowing functions are not beginning concepts, for instance, and thus should be introduced much later in the book in my opinion. Cross Joins are the first join type introduced in Chapter 2; this is a 'special' type of join used to create data or build lists, and is not used that often in the business world. A much better replacement might be the SELECT INTO, which is introduced way in the back of the book in a later chapter. There are other examples-my point is that for the beginner, the order here needs to be looked at more closely. It doesn't make sense a lot of the time.

Second, explanations and the use of drawings, pictures, or diagrams are lacking or non-existent. As an example, when I teach joins, I draw pictures on a whiteboard with minimal data to introduce concepts in a clear and concise manner; he has none of these. Many of the examples don't allow a student the opportunity to let the concepts 'hit home' because other ideas are introduced at the same time. Building from 'small to large', as it were, is for me a great method to use when explaining difficult concepts, but he does not use this methodology in the book.

Examples could be better. Right away I found that the examples in the chapter are not abundant, while the exercises are too far away from the examples, difficulty-wise. One reason is that his "TSQL2012" database could be better. I would use the AdventureWorks databases, which offer the ability to create more examples and questions at all levels of difficulties.

I could go on with more, but I think you get the idea of what I am trying to relay here...it's a good book, but I've seen better. As far as a book for someone who has never opened SSMS, or programmed and has no idea of the programming constructs, it leaves room for improvement as either a high school or jr. college textbook.

I base this review on my 13 years experience as an instructor at the jr. college level, so at this point I think I have a pretty good idea of how students handle TSQL concepts and the order of assimilation of these concepts. Using this book I find that I bounce around quite a bit, and leave many concepts out altogether. Do not walk away here with idea here that I'm flaming the book or the author, but rather critiquing the book based on how I am using the contents of the book. To me, it is evident that his first try at a beginner book has some fundamental flaws in a number of areas.

Maybe I'll write my own book one day...

it does everything it does well

I think it did everything that it did very well.
It explained differences between T-SQL and ANSI SQL in situations that called for it in a non-biased way. He uses both.
The author comes across as an expert that really knows the SQL trade, he should he has been doing it for a long time and is valued peer in the SQL community.

If you know nothing about sql get it.
If you know a some sql get it.

If you know a lot about sql programming get it and give it to someone that bugs you too much about SQL.
If you want to learn a good writing style for technical learning subjects get it.

This book is one of my all time favorites on programming etc.

The book itself is impressive with gorgeous endpapers, 51 photographic plates and 41 illustrations throughout the text. It will make a terrific holiday gift. Sykes is a photographer and writer who clearly loves Hockney's work, this is more a celebration of the artist and not a critical work. And I loved it. Sykes was granted extensive interviews with Hockney, his family and those who know him, that make this a most entertaining and insightful read. For readers like me who knew Hockney through is work and nothing else, we get the private and the public man. Equally as interesting as learning about the man is learning about his process, working on a given day until exhausted (like many of us), learning how technology can expand his creativity.

For those like me who didn't read volume one here is a brief synopsis: David Hockney: The Biography, 1937-1975 (April 17, 2012): Drawing on exclusive and unprecedented access to David Hockney's extensive archives, notebooks, and paintings, interviews with family, friends, and on Hockney himself, Christopher Simon Sykes provides a colorful and intimate portrait of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Born in 1937, David Hockney grew up in a northern English town during the days of postwar austerity. By the time he was ten years old he knew he wanted to be an artist, and after leaving school he went on to study at Bradford Art College and later at the Royal College of Art in London. Bursting onto the scene at the Young Contemporaries exhibition, Hockney was quickly heralded as the golden boy of postwar British art and a leading proponent of pop art. It was during the swinging 60s in London that he befriended many of the seminal cultural figures of the generation and throughout these years Hockney's career grew. Always absorbed in his work, he drew, painted and etched for long hours each day, but it was a scholarship that led him to California, where he painted his iconic series of swimming pools. Like the first volume

This is the second part of the Sykes bio of Hockney. Like the first volume, this book is filled with interviews with Hockney's friends, lovers, family and art-world associates. Th author's informed opinions and insights greatly enrich this bio. I suggest any interested reader start with the first volume. Don't let the length (roughly 750 pages in two volumes) put you off. It is all entertaining and interesting, well-illustrated as well.

Just bought this a few days ago because our Life Group leaders recommended we all get it and study it together. So far, it has been a really good learning tool. As with most Sarah Young books, I'd have to give it top ratings. This is my second year with the Jesus Calling 365 day devotional, and I also journal while doing it , so it's fun to look back to last years journaling and see my growth. Thank You Sarah and Jesus.

The provocative questions stimulate thought and practical action for me that evokes a positive change in my lifestyle. Thoughtful and challenging study that draws you closer to the Lord

Having read a number of Sarah Young's Jesus Calling books I was keen to see how she took that material to studying the Word. This is an 8-week study that can be used in a group and/or individually. Each week has a different theme centred on Jesus' presence which is a key subject in a lot of Sarah's writings.

Each week starts with considering a topic that impacts the theme for the week. So, for example, God's Presence Brings You Peace is one week's theme. The topic of consideration involves anxiety and what robs you of peace. There are a handful of questions to stimulate thought on what robs you of peace. She then uses 2 passages from Jesus Calling to illustrate how the Lord's Presence enables you to receive peace. Then there is a passage of Scripture that you meditate upon. In this example, it's when the disciples fear for their safety on the boat as Jesus sleeps below. The authors encourage you to step into the story so you imagine what it would be like. There are a series of questions for reflection and meditation.

During the course of the next 5 days of that week there is a short passage for each day and 3-4 questions for reflection based around the theme for the week.

I appreciated how each week was set out. The Jesus Calling material was only used as an accompaniment to the verses of Scripture. But what was most appealing about this study were the provocative and challenging questions. They really made you reflect on both the Word and your own situation. I definitely felt a greater sense of Jesus' presence as I worked through each day's activity.

The book comes with a set of notes for a leader so it's all set out for a group study and I expect it would be a great exercise to do it this way.

Definitely recommended.

Maybe we're not so bad after all

Scott Turow wrote the introduction to this book. Turow is one of my favorite authors, and he's one of the few who writes both fiction and non-fiction (and keeps them separate, unlike Michael Moore and Dan Brown). Having read Turow books and having read his writings about how he changed his views on the death penalty, I trust Turow. Therefore, his name on this book made me want to read it.

This work is non-fiction, and it gives credence to the idea that "truth is stranger than fiction." Remember the bizarre OJ Simpson "trial?" I never did watch the television coverage, so I got all of my information after the melodrama had subsided. Of course, you'll find the OJ spectacle covered in this book.

Interestingly, I read this book in parallel with listening to a couple of audio books on the same subject (one by two detectives on the case, another by Marcia Clark).

This book left some impressions on me:

* Rich people can be terribly cheap and petty. You would think that, with millions or billions of dollars, a person would not be so concerned about getting more that he or she would go to great lengths to hurt others to get it. After all, don't we stop eating when full? But some people are just gluttons.

* People can tell the most brazen, stupid lies. While most of the crimes are in this book are heinous, the lies the perpetrators spin are almost humorously pathetic. Of course, we see this all the time with the American Taliban (not their official name), which has a 95% error rate in the notices it sends out to terrified taxpayers.

* Not everybody views people as people (again, we see this with the American Taliban).

* People who commit the most awful crimes most often follow those crimes with behavior that says, "Catch me!" OJ Simpson was a classic example. The Menendez brothers epitomized this.

Horrendous crimes are interesting because they say something about us as well as the criminals. What really separates us from horrendous criminals, and how can we maintain that separation?

The first thing you notice about this book is it looks like a magazine. It's the same size as three or four magazines stacked on top of each other, and it is as photo-centric as any good magazine.

The material in this book comes from the files of People Magazine, so the cases do not represent a cross section of America. They represent a cross section of People Magazine's coverage. And that coverage is primarily movie stars, notable eccentrics, and the ultra-rich.

I've read People Magazine, because you find it in waiting rooms everywhere. To me, it's eye candy and is of little value. I really don't care what various celebrities are doing. They live on a different planet with different rules, and most of them are just plain crazy. This book bears that out.

I was surprised to discover the book has less of a fluff factor than the magazine does. In fact, it's not fluff at all, but a serious treatment of the material. But all the vignettes are short enough that you never get bogged down in any particular story. And here's something you rarely hear from me: The writing is first-rate.

Will you feel uplifted after reading this book? Maybe--that depends on whether you reflect on your own situation and your own circle of friends and loved ones. Will you be more able to see through deception and you might be more aware of dangers around you? Probably.

You will certainly be aware that our "justice" system is far from perfect. But then, we're all imperfect. Whatever petty annoyances you "suffer" with your spouse or other important people in your life, it's good sometimes to put all of that in context. You read this book and you realize that those irritating habits of your friends and loved ones are not worth getting terribly flustered over.

And what about your own foibles? Unless you are future subject material for a book like this, you should take comfort in the fact that you are not as flawed as you may have thought. That's reason enough to get up and face the world each day, to take on it challenges and be satisfied that you have done about as well as anyone can expect you to. We can all strive to be better, but sometimes a look at the dark side of humanity's worst can help us realize that--even with all of our imperfections--we are not so bad after all. And neither are those to whom we express criticism, disappointment, or irritation.

After reading this book, I feel like telling various people I know how much I appreciate them after all. Sometimes contrast, as Martha Stewart (also a subject of this book) might say, is "a good thing."

A book revealing human interest stories which turn celebrity as America watches the investigations, indictments, and trials

People Weekly magazine has captured the last 30 years of true crime stories in magazine-style reporting that includes multi-page feature articles as well as sidebars and photo spreads. People, originally a feature in Time Magazine, has been consistently lauded for excellence in editing and circulation, and since 2001 has maintained a 50/50 ratio of celebrity coverage to human interest coverage. In many ways, true crime reporting represents the nexus of celebrity (albeit usually unintentional celebrity) and human interest news reporting.

The 144-page book opens with murder - cold-blooded, pre-meditated homicide, from Andrew Cunanan to Scott Peterson. Other opening chapters focus on unusual criminals, crimes of passion, crimes that are stranger than fiction, serial killers, and murderous con artists. The profile of female con artist Sante Kimes, leader of a mother-son team, is chillingly captivating. Strange high-profile crimes focus on the fraudulent billing of the agency that ran Miss Cleo psychic ads and the fertility doctor who sold a method of treating an infertile husband's sperm for re-insemination that was really the doctor's own sperm! Crimes that went in and out of the headlines over a matter of decades are also described in detail, as well as the unsolved mysteries and sudden twists of national true crime.

Of course, Hollywood celebrities do take up a few chapters, from "The Many Trials of O.J." to "The Fall and Fall of Michael Jackson" to "Martha in the Big House" and the more recent Phil Spector and Robert Blake murder indictments. Several pages are devoted to the guilty pleasure of celebrity mug shots. There is even an entire section devoted to analysis and critique of the made-for-TV movies based on the true crimes of the last few decades. This is a highly-recommended coffee table book for any subscriber of People or fan of true crime from the macabre to the bizarre.
