So-so

This is a gorgeous cookbook with many beautiful pictures throughout. I'd say about half of the recipes have an accompanying picture. The book measures about 12 inches tall, so it may not fit on all book shelves. The book includes a primer on spices, tips on putting together an Indian meal, sample menus, wine pairing advice, and an introduction to cooking techniques unique to the Indian kitchen, as well as the cookware and tools you will need. The index is organized by both the original name of the dish, as well as the English translation. You can also look up dishes by ingredients, and not just main ingredients like dried legumes, but also by spices and other secondary ingredients.

So far, I have tried several dishes and they've ranged from OK to good, but have lacked that wow-factor. I have felt like most of the recipes have needed some sort of adjustments made to them. For example..

Mango Lassi - I added less yogurt than called for and still felt that the fruit flavor was not very prominent. I will add significantly less next time.

Everyday Dal - As other reviewers have mentioned, be wary of the amount of chilies called for. For example, in this recipe, three different kinds of chilies are called for: 2 dried red chili peppers, 2 fresh green chili peppers, and a teaspoon of Asian chili powder or cayenne pepper. I understand that each of the these is going to lend a slightly different flavor and type of heat to the dish, but unless you have quite the tolerance for heat, you're probably going to want to tinker with these amounts. Just for reference, I added one large jalapeno and a small dash of cayenne, and that was pleasantly spicy for me and my family.

Black-Eyed Peas and Rice - I felt like the rice turned out somewhat sticky/mushy. I'm not sure if this is due to the amount of water called for, the cook time, or some other factor.

Basmati Rice with Whole Spices - Same issue with the rice here. Also, I felt like 1 teaspoon of cloves was too much and needed to be reduced.

Overall, it's a really beautiful book and a great primer on Indian cooking, but I'm still on the lookout for an Indian cookbook with recipes that will work the first time and that I'm inspired to make again.

Beautiful cookbook with gorgeous illustrations!

My husband is British and is very familiar with Indian cuisine. I am American and before meeting him, I had tried it once in my 52 years! But I became a lover of this exotic flavorful cuisine with his introduction to the different favorites he grew up with. So this cook book was my first attempt at cooking anything Indian! My first suggestion....get the spices. Indian food is full of amazing spices we as Americans rarely utilize. Coriander, turmeric, Garam Masala, fresh ginger and LOADS of garlic to name a few. Get a starter kit (these are wonderful, economical and I recommend 'SpiceKits' here on Amazon). This will really help you just to dive right in. Also, be sure to have a food processor. If you have every worked with fresh ginger, then you know it is very fibrous and difficult to 'mince' or...frankly...do anything with. And you will be mincing plenty of garlic...so save some time and have a food processor on hand!

I love the book. It has some wonderful recipes and all of my husbands favs are there. I want to stress however, that the author created these recipes based on authentic Indian tastes! If you are not into spicy (and most Brits like their curry mild), then you will need to augment almost every single recipe to omit the red pepper (Asian red pepper).

The book has lots of extras such as where to purchase spices, and he gives lots of substitution options: ie: fish instead of chicken. I have now cooked many of the entree's in the book and my husband is over the moon with the results. I have yet to have any of the recipes come out in the time frame listed. I cannot brown an entire cut up raw chicken in 4 minutes for example. So many of these recipes do not give realistic completion times. As with any cooking style, it takes time to make it 'your own' and I am not quite there yet. But I do love this book and the gorgeous images provided of this wonderful cuisine that you will give you a much broader knowledge of the use of exotic spices and a whole new palette of flavors!

Best book on Indian food - a fellow Indian

Love this book ! I got it after it was recommended in one of my trustworthy blogs. The recipes are easy to follow, even for a novice cook, the instructions are step by step, easy to follow and foolproof. Being an Indian, i cook Indian food almost 3 times a day and this book easily fits in my regular routine to whip up something different but still authentic.
I followed many a recipes exactly and got amazing results, Kerala Beef fry ( i made it with Lamb) , the Kadai paneer, pepper chicken & Shrimp Briyani to name a few. An Indian book im glad i got.
My only complain, is that the Kindle version is not formatted to look that pretty compared to the book. The bright colorful pictures are like thumbnails and one recipe is jammed up, " The chicken tikka masala' with the previous one. Would have preferred to get the book instead.

A Big Beautiful Book That Shows and Explains Technique Behind the Asanas

This is a gorgeous, large volume written by Mr. Iyengar. Not only does it explain the history of yoga and its philosophy, it also discusses BKS Iyengar and his life. The bulk of the book focuses on the most popular asanas. The photography of the asanas (poses) are superb. Each pose is photographed from different angles so you can see what the pose is supposed to look like when done correctly. Iyengar yoga stresses proper alignment and breathing. There are tips and techniques for beginners and advanced yogis. I take yoga classes that have 40 people; the teacher does not have the time to go around correcting everybody. Reading this book has helped me enormously with my yoga. This volume is packed with information, so you can always discover something new when re-reading it. It is a fantastic reference for beginners to advanced students. I highly recommend this as an invaluable resource if you practice Iyengar Yoga.

This book is amazing - it shows you how to get into the pose, what the pose is beneficial for, gives you a 360 degree view of each pose and he then provides various modifications for each pose to take you through the months as you build your practice. The last part of the book give you a series of poses that are beneficial for various ailments or issues. This is an amazing book and I wish I had it sooner!

This is the best book on Yoga!!! I have been doing yoga for 25 years and wanted to share this book with my sister for her health concerns! I have the older version. Finally I can learn Arabic!

I have been taking Arabic in college for two years now. My teacher is great and teaches well, but still I always thought Arabic is way too hard for me, that I can't learn it no matter how hard I tried. But this book changed my whole perspective! This has to be one of the best programs I have used for Arabic thus far. It's set up very simple, it's perfect for beginners in this aspect. There are four books that come with pack, three are course book's that go from Beginner to Advanced and one book is dedicated to only teaching the script. The course books are set up like work books, it will give you a dialogue, grammar points and then exercises. The exercises vary from word searches and translating and vary between extremely easy and extremely hard. There are also quizzes at the end of each chapter to test yourself on your progress. In the beginning, it has a lot of "touristy" phrases but eventually it gets into very useful words. I think one chapter was on food and the week after I completed the chapter, I went to a Lebanese restaurant and was able to order a couple of things in Arabic, which for me was a huge achievement! I have used Living Languages Ultimate Arabic and I thought that was excellent also, but this one I think is a little better. I have to warn you that it is very formal Modern Standard Arabic, so if you are looking to learn a dialect don't bother with this program, but for Modern Standard it is fantastic. Also the audio is very clear and follows the book well. Each course book also features some dialogues that are on the audio. Another feature I love is the online flashcards, so I don't have to waste time making paper ones. I had gotten this book in the summer and this semester have noticed a really big improvement of how I'm doing in my Arabic class. I have to admit the book might not make you fluent in Arabic, but you will have a great head start. I really recommend this book.

Very Effective

There are so many language programs out there. I am very glad I got this one. It is very organized and very effective if you follow the program. I feel I must say nothing is easy so if you are looking for something easy studying a language isn't it. If you are willing to focus and really stop and check out how this program is organized you will be amazed at the way they have written this program. It is a step by step building block upon building block. That is the best way to learn. The audio is very good quality. I heard another program's audio and it was terrible, it made me appreciate this programs audio. As with any CDs it will get scratched somehow or the other sooner or later so I have made back up copies of my CDs.

I have spent a few minutes to make up a sheet for this program. It is a check off sheet. I find this is a great help in keeping track of my studies. I do this because along with this program I do some other online studies too to supplement my studies. I especially had to go outside of this program to get help with the script. I think some people will be great without doing that but I am kind of an extremely thorough person and like to overdo things but that works for me. On this study check off sheet I just followed the course and made it.

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS PROGRAM IS NOT GOOD. This really is an awesome program and you will get back even more than you put in. The price cant be beat. The set up of the program makes it very easy to follow and retain. Do not forget to go to their website and play the games and use the flash cards. You will even retain more that way too.

If you wish copy and paste the check off sheet i made below and follow it. Just check off each that apply as you go along the program. Each lesson has two sections. For example lesson 1 has a section titled Vocabulary Builder 1 and another section titled Vocabulary Builder 2, seems like all the lessons are like this. I actually didn't check all the lessons didn't have the time but what I checked that is what I saw. The check off sheet may not make sense to you when you look at it right now but when you get the program and start using it and see how the program is set up it will make sense.

In each section there are a series of lessons building upon each other. I do a check off sheet for each lesson. It feels pretty good to check off what I have done and even better to sign off at the end when I know I have nailed the lessons. Yea. I sign my check off sheet. It feels good to know its done and sealed in my memory. So have fun and best wishes on your arabic studies.

Absolutely Wonderful

I am new at the Arabic language. I originally spent a fair amount of time studying Persian, but I decided with the vast majority of Arabic speakers that this was a language I wanted to learn. I plan to take classes in the future and wanted to get a big head start on this language. The product has extremely surpassed my expectations. I was hesitant to purchase the complete edition because I felt intimidated by the Arabic language and thought I may require the platinum edition. After going halfway through the script guide (which is very easy to understand) I can honestly say I can read the majority of MSA words if I sound them out. I am very impressed because I have only spent a few days using the script guide and already am seeing my reading improve. The CD's included are also very nice and clear sounding. If you are a motivated learner I do not think you will require the platinum edition. For only $28.73 you really don't have much to lose. I am excited to continue using these books daily and watch my skills get better. I will recommend this product to anybody studying MSA.

About the Author
Tim Hauf is a photographer with a passion for travel and a desire to create a better understanding and appreciation of the world around us through photography. In addition to calendars and four other books, his work has been featured in several publications including Islands, Coast to Coast, Roads to Adventure, Sunset, Explore, Terre Sauvage, Dove, and others. Tim is currently working on a new book about Kangchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world.

Conger Beasley has collaborated with photographer Tim Hauf on two previous photo/text books, Little Trees, Big Sky: Portrait of a Northern Wilderness, and Solo-Khumbu: The Trek to Everest. His book, We Are a People in This World: The Lakota Sioux and the Massacre at Wounded Knee, won the Western Writers of America Spur Award for best contemporary nonfiction in 1995. He is currently working on a book about the mysterious death of Meriwether Lewis.

Beautiful photographs of a far away place

I bought this book because we are planning a trip to Patagonia. This book with its magnificent photographs has been a huge help in planning the trip. Not because it gives any travel tips, but the photographs speak for themselves. This is not a travel advice book. There is no information regarding where to stay or eat. However, the photographs tell me what not-to-miss sites to include in my tour. The photographs are so gorgeous that I cannot hardly wait to get there. This book plus a good South American travel agent have allowed me to establish a travel plan to the most scenic locations. The photographer must have spent a long time traveling the area. His views of glaciers, lakes, dramatic clouds and wildlife show his talent. Many outstanding panoramas are included. These must have been taken with a high quality panorama camera. This is a very nice photo book, to be looked at over and over again.

Patagonia a beautiful read!

I recommend this book highly. Tim Hauf?s remarkable photography captures the many regions of Patagonia - the diversity of landscapes, the various moods and raw beauty, a stark grandeur. The uncivilized immensity of mountains and water, sometimes filled with icebergs other times with whitecaps, some misty above the power of falls, leaves the viewer in awe. We are surprised and delighted by the variety of images, from the smallest of flowering bushes to the romping of guanacos, but overall we are speechless before the vastness of empty space. Fortunately, Conger Beasley?s text brings the photography into a semblance of understandable. By introducing us to the history of the region alongside tales of the personal journey that he shared with Hauf, Beasley brings the reader into the wild and foreign land as a fellow traveller. We are less intimidated by the endless wild.

Tear You Apart is a modern fairytale that is an actual fairytale. The old stories and the new combine into this amazing story with characters I love. Sarah is such a wonderful writer and the way she describes the scenes you can't help but fall in. With the mix of different fairytales (even from different culture) and multiple repeating characters will keep you enraptured.

Tear You Apart is fabulous, glamorous and magical but it's also dark, gritty and dangerous. You have princesses and princes, fabulous parties, fairies roaming around, magic in plain sight, and fairytales coming to life. However you also have the dark-side like you would see in the original fairytales. There are these curses that come to life and some people don't survive their curses, they actually die.

Now characters from Kill Me Softly do make their rounds in this book and there is hints of what happened in the previous book in this one so I suggest reading Kill Me Softly first.

Viv is not what you would think Snow White would be like. She lives in modern times and she has know about the curse since she was little. Regina is plotting her death and would one day care out her plans and Henley may be forced to take her heart. So that means that Viv turned into a very cold/mean person. She isn't evil but she is harsh and at times you can see who she would have been and also how she still is, soft and caring at times.

Henley is a really nice guy and he really cares about Viv. Henley and Viv have such a strong bond however she treats him like crap because she believes in the curse, but he loves her so much that he sticks around. Since curses have the power to change people you can't help but wonder who side is he on.

Regina plays her role as the Evil Queen well, but she has this backstory. You find out that she wasn't always like this and I did find myself feeling a bit sorry for her.

I love when a story is beautiful and frightening. The descriptions of the scenes, parties and places are glamours and then you see the dark side of this tale and it just makes it better. Tear You Apart had me on the edge of my seat, so many different things was happening, trying to figure out if Viv would survive the murder attempts, trying to solve the mysteries and which fairytales where which.

I love this series so much and I really wish that it will continue on.

My Advice: Take a Bite--But This Apple is Sweet AND Sour

If you love fairy tales, read this. If you love writing that reads like dessert, read this.

If you can't get beyond characters being petty and immature most of the time, you might want to skip this.

I think it was worth it, because despite my frustrations with the characters, the scenes the author paints are gorgeous, and her reimagining of fairy tales is ingenious. But if that's the sort of thing that drives you nuttier than all of Snow White's pet squirrels, well, fair warning.

THE SWEET: Sarah Cross is an incredible world-builder. Ever since I read her first book set in the fairy-tale town of Beau Rivage, where residents are Cursed to play out certain roles from fairy tales, I was riveted by both the premise and her execution of it. She does an amazing job of capturing the magic and glamour of these stories, while not losing sight of the underlying darkness in many of the original versions of the fairy tales. Not everyone gets a happy ending. Not everything works out. But the curses don't always win either. Cross does a nice job of keeping you guessing.

I also love how she tied in characters from her short stories--Dusty and her prince have a cameo, the Twin Roses cafe is mentioned, and the Twelve Dancing Princesses certainly have a role (though I would have loved to have seen a bit of Mazurka--I missed her sass).

I really just can't overstate how much I love Beau Rivage, and all the incredibly well-thought-out fairy tale details at work here. Also, I loved how Sarah put a twist on the tale by mashing 3 fairy tales together. I won't say which, as it would spoil it, but I loved the way it was just layer upon layer of story.

THE SOUR: As far as the leading characters this time around, I can't say that I was quite as enamored. I was a bit skeptical going in, knowing that this story was going to be about Vivian and Henley, or Snow White and her Huntsman. In the first book, KILL ME SOFTLY, they had been background characters, notable primarily for their exceedingly screwed up relationship. They had initially come off as high-strung, destructive, and a bit irritating. However, it could never be said that their relationship wasn't *interesting*--I certainly was curious to know how they'd come to be the way they were, so I read this book to solve that mystery.

As characters, I didn't mind so much that Viv and Henley had started out as selfish people. Every character has to grow, and I was willing to give it time. What bothered me was that, despite all the plot that occurred, there wasn't much growth, and when it happened, it seemed to come out of nowhere. *Everyone* is *so* selfish. Henley says he loves Viv, and obviously he thinks he could never kill her, but he really considers the possibility that it might be fair to murder her, essentially for having the gall to choose someone else. I will give it to Henley that he is forever shoving that away and acts selflessly enough later on to (more than) make up for it. He is probably the least selfish of the bunch, or grows the fastest. But we spend so little time really getting to know him that he comes across as a bit of a cardboard cut-out.

*THE SPOILERS*

And Viv is almost unbearably self-centered, right up until nearly the end. Near the end of the book, she is still telling Henley that, "I don’t want you to be happy if it means you’re happy with someone else.” They are having a discussion wherein the options are that he ends up with someone else OR DIES. I mean, that is just an extremely selfish view to take on someone that you supposedly love. By the end, Viv does change her tune. She recognizes that she wants him to be happy, even as she hates the idea of him being happy without her, so...I'll give her that? But it's a very long, frustrating journey. She's claiming that she loves him for most of the book, but very rarely do her words and actions seem to reflect that, even after she's supposedly learned from her previous mistakes.

Jasper--he was selfish. Oh, so selfish. Of course, since he ends up as what I would call a minor villain, or at least an obstacle, disliking him hugely is not a problem. He comes across, initially, as a good guy--someone who Viv might not love yet, but who is willing to protect her. She rushes into things (understandably, really, as it's her best plan to stay alive), only to find that her Prince Charming's "charm" is a shiny veneer covering the truth that he really just cares about himself (and his sister, to be fair). He thinks that, as her prince who is fated to save Viv, he has earned her. Viv...is not all about that, to which I say, go girl! And I will admit that their relationship was far more toxic. At least Viv and Henley do care for each other deeply, which balances out some of their selfish tendencies. Both Jasper and Viv see each other as more of a means to an end. Given how many people Viv has hurt and used, I can't say that she seems *a lot* better. Really, Jasper and Viv are two sides of the same coin--they live most of their lives in fear, going with the Curses' flow, using people when it's convenient. Viv gains some guts once she gets to the Underworld, though. The worst things Jasper does--slapping Viv, and tricking her into thinking that Henley is dead--sway the balance so that Viv is a bit better in the end. But not by so much.

My main issues, ultimately, are that the heroes--while better than the King of the Underworld (a pretty low bar to set)--are not really better than the minor antagonist, and I don't feel like this is ever really called out or explored. I mean, Viv and Henley know that they treat each other badly, they apologize, but to me there wasn't really enough team work to make me excited about the pairing. We see their relationship at its dysfunctional finest, then they take some time away from each other, separately realize how much they love each other, and go through most of the plot separately. I never grew to love them as a couple, because we never spend much time with them, together, interacting in a not-fraught-with-anger-and-doom, healthy and positive way. I would say that Viv's coming to understand her stepmother progressed far better than the romance. Though I had my issues with it, I did appreciate how their relationship didn't wrap up nicely, and yet I felt like they'd come to a bit of understanding.

Mostly, this story seems to be about how people who love each other can also hate each other and try to kill each other, and it always seemed a very self-centered, gross kind of love to me, until the very end, which kind of felt rushed.

Additionally, the solving of the "riddle" really came out of nowhere for me. I feel like it would have been better if there had been a bit more hinting, so that in hindsight the reader could have that "aha!" moment. Although perhaps it was there, and I will notice it upon re-reading. I gobbled this story down like Hansel and Gretel on a gingerbread house, so I could have missed something. If anything, that speed is proof that, even as the characters aren't my favorite, I still love the writing and world-building.

I had one serious question--when Viv was trapped in the Underworld and didn't know what had happened to her friends, why didn't she just ask the 12 Dancing Princesses to find out for her? That seemed like an obvious solution, and it kind of bugged me that she never tried it.

The last thing that threw me off a bit were the references to the goings on of Book 1. They mention Felix, and worry about running into him, which seems like foreshadowing, but nothing ever comes of it. Perhaps it's a suggestion that we'll get another Beau Rivage story that will deal with that loose end--something certainly seems to be going on between Freddie and Layla, so I want to find out what's up with that!--but it kept me waiting on something that never came. Still, I guess it would have been weird if they didn't mention those events at all, so it's not a big detraction. This was meant to be Viv and Henley's story, not "Mira and Felix and Blue Part II", and I get that.

I love Beau Rivage, and I'd love to read more stories set there. Sarah Cross is a talented author, and even though I never fell in love with these protagonists like I want to, I hope she keeps writing in this world. I'm really dying to find out what happens to everyone else!

All-time favorite book. LOVE IT.

New all-time favorite. LOVED this. I first read "Kill Me Softly" and really liked it. So I decided to go ahead and get this one as well and like it even better. This is my new favorite book of all time. The plot work is incredible and I love that Sarah's characters are flawed and show that you don't have to be a perfect Mary Sue. I feel that I should also note I'm fairly critical of books being that I'm a young author myself, but I really and truly enjoyed this one. A must read for anyone who likes a bit of dark and flawed love or anyone who's enjoyed the other Beau Rivage tales. Seriously cannot say how much I love love LOOOVE this book.
