Now this is the Michael Connelly we all adore!

Suicide run, the other three Harry Bosch short stories book released last month was a disappointment for most fans, myself included.

This book, on the other hand, is a great and exciting reading! Here you can see our old friend, Harry Bosch in his glory. The stories are good, with great plots, well written mysteries, and have a profoundness that is touching.
The first story shows us a little more about Bosch's war years - I'm never tired of hearing about them. Plus, it explains something I was curious about, but I'll not say more to avoid spoilers...

The second story is deep and sad. It makes one wonder about parenthood and its difficulties. We have Ignacio there, and I missed him...

The last story names the book and it starts at the very beginning of Bosch's career. He always talks about his first murder investigation now we can read it. It's great to be there with him, and to see him, years later, trying to bring justice to the case. Typical Bosch - never letting go.

*EDIT - technically, it's not his first investigation, it's his first dead body as a cop, when he was still a rookie but you'll see it's almost the same for him...-*

Those who canceled the pre-order for this book because of Suicide Run, please, think again. I believe this is a must read for all Harry Bosch's friends!

Great short story collection.

If i had any complains about this collection, it would be that it's too short!
You can read this 3 excellent stories in about 45 min, 1 hour.
It is a delight to see how the Harry Bosch character goes about solving a case.
One good thing about this format is that if you are on the fence about Michael Connelly or the Harry Bosch series, this is a good entry point, since they are basically condensed novels, stripped to the bone, lean and mean.
These short stories embody what i love about Harry Bosch as a character and Michael Connelly as the greatest crime writer of his time.

Short, Made for TV, Stories???

I do not write a lot of reviews but feel I have to write a review after seeing the string of 5 Star reviews these stories received. I am sure Mr. Connelly writes wonderful intricate plotted books. But these 3 stories are just too simplistic. Anyone who has watched a Castle, Closer, or Mentalist episode will guess the outcome a quarter of the way into the story. The stories are fine but hardly worth purchasing. The preview of "The Drop" (Connelly's newest, now released title) was quite good. My recommendation... skip the 3 short stories and put your $2.99 toward THE DROP instead.

Lovely and Simple

Most importantly for me, all the recipes have a color picture with it AND the recipes are super simple.

At the end of last year, I started an eating plan that was super healthy, but it's not one that my children need to follow completely. I needed new ideas for them in order to give them home cooked and nutritious meals, without causing them to lose weight with me. I also don't have a ton of time to spend in the kitchen, so simplicity is hugely important for me. (I'm a homeschooling mama to 3 little ones. My leftover energy is minimal.)

This cookbook has given me tons of new ideas for my family. Since there's pictures with every meal, it's easy to let my little ones pick out something they want to try. Since the recipes are so simple, it makes it easier to include that child in the preparation of the meal, too. Win!

The set-up of this cookbook is that it takes a specific ingredient, and then gives you 10 recipes that include that ingredient. For example, broccoli is the spotlight in one, and you'll get 10 ideas for a dish that includes broccoli.

I love this cook book! The recipes are simple and healthy but the best thing is the format of this book. Everything has a high quality picture and the book is broken down into ingredient sections vs types of meals so it's easy to find something to make based on what you have at home!

Entertaining but fell flat of expectation.

Let me first say that I truly enjoy the writing of Dani Pettrey. I am a huge fan of the Alaskan Courage Series, the books were different and filled with well research plots, depth of characters and setting, romance and suspense. Therefore, I was anxiously awaiting the release of this new series to see the new group of characters that Pettrey would introduce to us. The story was good. However, something is missing. It was sort of your typical formula and possessed all the elements that Christian romance novels should have to be enjoyable but there was nothing endearing about the characters. "The brothers" are suppose to be life long friends yet, other than a moment of truth between two of them about a tragic event that happened in the past and the last chapter, we don't see them relating to each other as anything other than co-workers. Finley, the love interest, is strong and intelligent although shortly after the first few chapters her identity is mainly as sidekick/ride-along. Outside of Griffin wanting to be with her to keep her safe, there is no reason for her to be involved in the investigation and her "skills and expertise" are set aside never to be used again. It was sad to see what could have been a great start to a series fall flat.

Do I recommend you read this book? Sure, it's entertaining. Will I read the next in the series? Yes, because I have hope that as the series grows, hopefully, the writing will grow as well. Would I pay $9.99? I think you could wait this out a few months until it drops a little in price. Your not going to miss anything.

By My Favorite Pastime
Park ranger Griffin McCray finds a body buried in a Gettysburg cemetery. Unfortunately that body is not part of the Civil War bodies that are buried there. This body is more recent. Finley Scott is called in to identify the remains.
The person who hid the body does not want the remains identified and will do anything within their power to keep evidence from pointing to them, including kill again.

Griffin recognizes the bullet wound in the body as the work of an assassin. Griffin has no desire to work with Finley. She is too attractive and Griffin refuses to let anyone inside of his heart. Finley has a way of winning people over though. Griffin appoints himself as her protector while the murder investigation is underway, it is hard to keep up barriers while spending so much time with Finley.

Both Finley and Griffin have pain in their past that makes them vulnerable and has hurt past relationships. The chemistry between them though is hard to deny and soon those barriers begin to break down. Will Griffin be able to protect Finley from their unseen foe before it is too late?

I think this is a solid start to a new series for Dani Pettrey. I did think that the romance between Finley and Griffin moved too quickly. It seemed like one minute Griffin was stand-offish to Finley(yet attracted to her), and then in the next moment they were so in love there was nobody else on the planet! I felt like I missed a chunk of the story somewhere. I was like, "What? When did that happen?" Other than that I think I am going to like all of the characters in this new series. Looking forward to seeing what happens with Parker, Declan, Ashley, Kate and maybe even finding out what has happened to Luke, the missing "pirate" of the group.

My Review: From the back cover of the book, you might think that Griffin McCray is the main character, but Finley Scott plays a big role in the book also. Griffin and Finley’s time working together—and annoying each other—is about to end, when a skeleton is uncovered one night. They both immediately contact trusted people tell help them get to the bottom of this.
One of the things I didn’t like was that at one point, Finley Scott says that she doesn’t know whether the remains are male or female—but goes on to talk about them as Jane Doe… At one point someone Finley worked with is killed, but it is brushed off. (I think the author could have made the same point by just knocking him unconscious.) Really the only thing that happens to let you know that it is sad, is someone says, “I can’t believe he’s gone.” But then it just carries on like his life didn’t matter—only Jane Doe’s.
At one point Griffin takes Finley to a shooting range. She had never been shooting before, so he told her how, and Finley shot… and hit it dead in the center of the target with the first bullet. I’m not saying that that never happens, but it doesn’t usually happen. (and when having that skill later proves pointless, she might as well had a realistic shooting talent.)
Because Finley seems to be in trouble, Griffin insists that he stay at her house, or she stays at him. Finley agrees to it—but that seem really out of character for her, at least to me. She is super stubborn and determined when it come to everything else and then Griffin—practically a stranger—just declares that this is going to happen? I didn’t like that at all.
Declan Grey works for the FBI, and took charge of the case. For some reason though (which is revealed in the story) none of his bosses or coworkers want to help him. What I didn’t like about that was that he was still able to get all of the warrants that he wanted/needed.
At some points I felt like Ms. Pettrey’s writing was weak, because instead of writing about the character and letting me come to my own conclusions, the obvious was stated…. A lot. Over and over, Griffin would talk about how creepy this person was.
I read this book all in one sitting. (I was in the car for fourteen hours so I had plenty of time to read.  ) I think maybe that’s why there was so many things I didn’t like—I didn’t have time to take it all in and process it maybe. But there was that one character that was the key to the case of something, I didn’t remember hearing about him until three fourths of the way through. (but he also played a small role). All in all I’d give this book three out of five stars. I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to read all of Ms. Pettrey’s books, but if I got the opportunity to get them for free I may.

An Academic with a brain!

Shiller does to the Effecient Market Theory what Columbus did to the flat earth theory. This is one of the finest books on markets I have read, and I have read hundreds.

Good but technical

There are some long reviews on the book by professionals that I can't match in content. However for readers interested in this book because of previous reading of 'irrational exuberance' or even 'the new financial order', be warned! It is a pretty technical book with lot's of statistics. Without basic knowledge of all the R's and covariances a lot of the true value gets lost. Still Robert Shiller is a clear thinker and even without a good grasp of teh statistics it still contains interesting observations.

The best book on volatility ever written!

I am a futures trader/ stock investor/ produce distributor. My constant involvement in markets of one kind or another led me to develop a deep desire to understand volatility. Unfortunately the only books I could find dealt with option volatility. "Market Volatility" has been THE best book dealing with market mechanics that I have ever read. I recommend the book as a "must have" to my friends in the industry.
